Todd Akin to Claire McCaskill: You Should Drop Out
abcnews.go.com ^ | Aug 23, 2012

Posted on 08/23/2012 2:38:25 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

After days of ignoring Republican pleas to abandon his U.S. Senate campaign in Missouri, Rep. Todd Akin today received an even more damning message: A new Rasmussen poll shows that Akin, who held a tidy lead before making his controversial comments about rape and pregnancy, is now down 10 percentage points (48-38 percent) to incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Never fazed, the Akin campaign shot back with an unlikely proposal.

“The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48 percent after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is,” Akin spokesman Perry Akin said in a statement. “If she can’t break 50 percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down.”

McCaskill, whose political career might well have been saved by Akin’s moment of madness, went online to cast doubt on the validity of the survey.

“Rasmussen poll made me laugh out loud,” she tweeted. “If anyone believes that, I just turned 29. Sneaky stuff.”

McCaskill then linked to a story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel claiming Rasmussen, with its ties to high-powered Republican operatives like Karl Rove, had intentionally stretched the spread in an effort to push Akin out of the race.

The final deadline for Akin to withdraw is Sept. 25. After that his name cannot be replaced on the ballot. But there is no indication he’s even considering it.

Today, he reported on his Facebook page, ”Thousands and thousands of people have stepped up today and helped us raise over $100,000 in donations as small as $3. The message is loud and clear… the people of Missouri believe they should pick candidates, not party bosses or Washington elites.”

Well, if you see Romney as evil, there isn’t much more to say.

He’s certainly more liberal than I am, but evil? I think not.

> ”Thousands and thousands of people have stepped up today and helped us raise over $100,000 in donations as small as $3."
> Wonder how many of them were Democrats?

Seeing as how McCaskill was Akin's most vociferous supporter this week, begging him to stay in the race, it's likely a huge portion of those $$ are from Dems who heeded her call.

Don't forget MO has open primaries, and since McC was unopposed in hers, she asked Dems to cross-over to vote in the GOP primary for Akin. In a crowded field of 9 GOP candidates, it wouldn't have been too hard to tilt it in his favor.

Now, those same Dems and others are likely giving large numbers of teensy donations to Akin in the hope that the large number of donors will convince him his popularity is actually increasing, while the total sum of $$ will still be too small to make much difference.

Three dollars?? Gimme a break! After paying per-transaction fees to VISA and the finance website and any other vendors in the chain, there's going to be peanuts left of that $3, and I'll bet most of these "donors" are aware of that!

Much of the rest probably comes from conservatives (like many on this forum) who, after a lifetime of witnessing countless unjustifiable attacks by lefties on conservative candidates, plus fewer (but still many) unjustifiable attacks by RINOs on conservative candidates, have come to the wrong conclusion that ALL calls for a conservative to step out of a race are automatically unjustified and arising from suspicious motives.

That's the correct diagnosis *ALMOST* all of the time, but not this time. It's one of the rare instances when the calls should be heeded. The tidal wave of conservatives and/or Republicans calling for him to step down certainly *ARE* justified in this case.

I don't see this as a call for Akin to "fall on his sword for the good of the party". Rather, it's a case of him already falling on his sword all on his own, and now being asked to get off the sword and hand it over to another fighter for the cause, one who isn't terminally wounded.

The constant character assassination rhetoric on Akin is fanning the flames of hotheaded loons…….

Threat Against Rep. Akin Being Investigated
The FBI and US Capitol police are investigating a reported threat against Congressman Akin. This is an active investigation.

Police are not willing to release more details. At this time authorities are keeping security operations and procedures confidential.

You're wasting your time trying to buttress the idea that statistics is a real compared to biology. There is no other way to frame the juxtaposition you made.

it amazes me that these Luddites claim we should forgive Akin because he apologized, and then they justify his original offensive statement.

.... “legitimate rape” and “the woman’s body has ways to shut that whole thing down. ....

Not only can we forget about the female unaffiliated MO voters, but forget about a significant chunk of female Republican MO voters as well.

His implied claim that the vast majority of rape accusations are lies, must be galling to even staunchly conservative women who have to deal with fears, if not nightmares, of being raped and not being believed. And as for conservative women who HAVE been raped (or nearly raped) but were not believed by some number of people, I can't help but wonder what they think of Akin right now!

I agree with your post 78 and I dare anyone to call me a newbie. You will be hard pressed to find a Freeper who’s been around as long as I have.

If it wasn’t what Akin said initially that raised suspicion that he wasn’t ready for prime time, what he’s done since then should confirm it beyond a shadow of a doubt.

His behavior gets more bizarre as each day goes by.

Anyone other than me remember the verbal gaffe that was a major factor in deep-sixing the 1988 Pres. candidacy of that guy with the eyebrows? Dukakis or CacaDoofus or some similar name.

(Hint: It had to do with male attitudes towards rape).
