I’d go with the dork explanation myself. Of course the way he did it would be just fine if his audience would accept his world view and stand on their heads and gaze upon their messiah.

It is stupid to give this even one minute. If you were standing by Obama in the picture, looking out at the photographers, from left to right Obama and the other guys are spelling "OHIO". It's only when you look at them from the photographer's side that it looks like "OIHO". They actually had to spell "OIHO" from their perspective left to right in order for it to look like "OHIO" to the photographers.

What a waste of time.

it’s rather obvious what happened. The idiots were looking down at their shirts, and it looked right to them because it would have been upside down. They weren’t smart enough to figure it out without prompting.
