Jay Leno on Tonight Show Layoffs: 'We've Been Taken Over By Bain Capital' By Noel Sheppard Created 08/21/2012 - 10:18am
Jay Leno on Monday addressed the recent announcement that there have been numerous layoffs at NBC's Tonight Show forcing him to take a pay cut to save some of his staff.
Feeling the need to take a cheap shot at presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, Leno quipped, Turns out now we've been taken over by Bain Capital" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
Leno began his opening monologue saying, Welcome to the Tonight Show, or as Comcast calls us, The Expendables. That's right.
After some laughter and applause, Leno continued, As you may have heard, our parent company has downsized the Tonight Show. You know, and we've consistently been number one in the ratings. And if you know anything about our network, that kind of thing is frowned upon.
And more bad news, Leno said. Turns out now we've been taken over by Bain Capital. Oh, I can't believe that.
I guess if you're a late night television host, it's imperative that every gag involve Romney somehow.
But Leno wasn't finished.
See, I knew something was going on, he continued. Friday morning, I woke up and there was a peacock head in my bed.
But the good news, said Leno, the Tonight Show, it's still free to get into the Tonight Show. Bad news: its 100 bucks to get out. Okay? So please, have your money ready. Exact change if possible, though.
Jay, The Tonight Show was downsized on May 22, 1992.
It’s not a joke unless everyone thinks it’s funny.
Exactly. I thought it was pretty funny.
Anybody want to see Leno’s tax returns?
Simply stagering that - even here! - people simply cannot grasp reality and are so easily fooled by “just comedy”.
Welcome to the world of the free market-competition.
It is indeed. The networks support Zero; no comedian - host or guest - is allowed to mock der Fuhrer. Now, Vice-Chancellor Biden, he is apparently fair game (but even the material aimed at him is obviously restrained).
I was surprised when I caught a snippet of Leno's show last night (during the "funny newspaper clippings" segment) and he showed a photo of Obama where a crystal chandelier hanging behind him made it look like he was wearing a sparkly tiara and earrings. That's about as rough as it gets for the Anointed One. Must be nice.
Just imagine the venom that's being stored-up for Romney.
You sir are truly an ArrogantBastard....
Anyone knows that if Bain Capital had actually taken it over MSNBC would have been off the air on Monday and they would be trying to find something more profitable.
The economy is so bad The Tonight Show is losing money. Whose fault is it? Bus...I mean Romney!
You’d think Leno could have taken a bigger paycut and saved everyone’s job. But nooo ... he’s too greeedy.
Release your tax returns Jay!
Yes it’s comedy. Lighten up
I can only speak for myself but the problem I (and probably allot of other people) have is it's almost always directed towards Repubs/Conservitives, almost never at lib/dems like zero and his ilk. If these “comments” were more evenly balanced I think people wouldn't have such a problem with it.
I'm kinda getting tired of the “oh he's just a comedian so you can't criticize him” excuse.
I always said deep down Jay is a goose stepping moronic liberal who will always lick
the boots of his masters.
Team 0bama probably called Jay and told him to deflect these layoffs away from being because of 0bama’s policies.
He is correct, however. It is propaganda.
Thanks for confirming your poor judgment and lack of discernment.
I yam what I yam ... no false advertising, here.
You have fallen on your not-funny-anymore @$$ because your program has shown you are a sycophant liberal suck-up...
Balance the scales by being fair and equally "humorous" across the political spectrum....
...Perhaps you will get some of your audience back.
I turned your show off some years ago...
... and I go out of the way to boycott your sponsors.
I am sure you can get a job as an auctioneer...
G'luck...
Yeah rightNOT
Also, IF it were TRUE
