More on Akin (Went AWOL)
Time ^ | August 21, 2012 | Mark Halperin

HALPERIN: “The national Republicans are feeling a little frustrated. not only do they not have any persuasive arguments that have worked so far but they’re having trouble finding him or reaching him. They’re not in dialogue with him as they might be with a normal party nominee.

And this is before the pounding has started (with no defense from Rove, RNC, etc). He’ll be lucky to get 25% of the vote.

Before the pounding started? Are you kidding me? This is the #1 story on every political show for two days now. The heat will die down. And if the Republicans would unite and defend the right of a guy to make a verbal gaffe and be allowed to apologize for it, there wouldn't be a story for much longer. Just the usual Democrat nattering about nonsense instead of real issues that the voters will quickly tire of.

You may not care, but they wield a lot of power in situations like this. This isn’t the primary anymore. Akin is locked in and needs help from the GOP infrastructure (kind of hard to build stuff up from scratch at the last-minute).

1. Nasty (fair or unfair) meme.

2. Big money pulling out.

3. Taking a nasty p/r hit which will only fester. Dems will pound this home everyday and will become a distraction.

4. GOP will start pulling back “machine operations” such as phone banks, GOTV, county offices, etc.,

5. Drip, drip, drip.

It’s in the inertia phase now...gravity is a bitch.

the conservative base should be beating the drum them. Force the Media into submission and not back down.

Akin should have waiting until he had won the election to 'fix' America's wanton abortion crisis.

BZZZZZTTT! Why in the world do we need to hide our pro-life views in a country that is more pro-life than ever? A campaign is the time to CAMPAIGN for what we believe in and convince the American public we are right. Shutting up about being pro-life is what the pro-abortion RINOs want us to do, because they know that's how they get what they want and get to keep abortion safe, legal and not-so-rare in this country. Bringing the horror of abortion into the public consciousness at any and every time we can is our civic duty as decent, moral people.

I think those on this thread that want to support him should think a little bit about what happens if he does win. What committee slots will he be given? Will he even REMAIN a Republican (that by itself might keep Harry Read as Majority Leader!!) After all, why couldn’t he just declare himself independent after the swearing in? He certainly wouldn’t owe the party his vote.

How effective could he be for Missouri? What odds are there that ANY earmarks for him will be approved? All he does is bring to the forefront the worst caricature of the conservative religious wing of our party, which I have great respect for normally.

On a side note - can we formally set up a write-in campaign for Steelman if he doesn’t drop out?

Which is why the Republican base should be petitioning and campaigining for the GOP to STOP THE STUPIDITY and give Akin his funding and his phone banks. The party is there to represent us, the conservative voter, not elite, effete liberals from states like Massachusetts. If the Senate seat is lost, it will because of the GOP pulling funding, not Akin simply doing what the voters of Missouri asked him to do.

Excuse me? 'Legitimate rape' is NOT our 'war'. Claire is the drum we intended to 'beat'. You kinda have to have the 'seat' to have any kind of authority to tear down liberals sacred cow....'women's right to choose'.

Like most politicians, his ego is bigger than his concern for our country. I could be proven wrong if he pulls out but it is unlikely that he will do the right thing and pull out.

Who cares? If more people dropped the "R" and simply voted conservative, it'd probably do a lot more good for our movement than compromising with wealthy liberal RINOs who have no moral values at all and simply are in this party because they want their taxes cut out of pure selfish greed.

I do NOT want Akin to shut up, I want him to WIN!!! He needs more than conservative voters to beat Claire. He must be wiser than the serpent.... and that he is NOT!!!!

As Mark Levin found out, there’s a lot of conservative support for Aiken out there and the GOP may end up doing far more damage by doing something than by doing nothing.

It was an offensive joke about the weather. Akin made a substantive statement in a public interview that implied women cant get pregnant from rape, which is both offensive and ignorant. And made it worse with the ‘legitimate rape’ phrase. Both are bad but the latter is substantively worse.

Akin’s comment is worse than Clayton’s joke or Allen’s “macaca” and he’s now got zero electoral viability.

what are the laws on running 3rd party candidate?

I think all it needs is 10,000 valid signatures on a petition.

Drip, drip, drip.

This has got inertia now and he’s damaged goods (fair or unfair). He opened his mouth and really stepped in it. You can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Once the infrastructure is pulled at this point you have to face facts. He’s become a distraction and we need 50+ sens to repeal Obamacare (the more the better in case anyone gets a case of the “jumpin Jim syndrome”).

To be fair, he said pregnancy was rare, not that it doesn’t happen. And, for the record, when you are under duress your adrenals kick in to overdrive and everything about your body changes until the ‘threat’ has ceased. When you’re attacked, you are then in the fight or flight mode.

This does not mean you can’t get pregnant if raped, by any stretch of the imagination, but your whole body stops functioning at a normal level and ALL of your hormones change drastically. Adrenaline is a hormone and they are all tied together.

With this said, I really hope he drops out as he is not good at articulating any points that I’ve heard and I’d like to see Sarah Steelman put in his place.

AKIN IS UP TO NO GOOD.

It looks every bit like he's trying to run out the clock on the MO GOP and they'll be hard pressed to find a court to remove him.

McCaskill got the opponent she wanted and he aims to make sure she's reelected.

Question: Has Akin helped or hindered that effort with his words?
