We both know the Dems would not have let that one pass. They would have painted whoever said it as someone who doesn't care about women and who wants to force them to carry children resulting from a violent and horrible experience.

Why did he call student loans a cancer? Why did he say he was opposed to subsidized student lunches for poor children? Because he's an idiot. In every one of these instances Akin had a valid, conservative message he was trying to get across and in every one of these instances he managed to look like a boob. Why do you think that McCaskill was doing the happy dance when she found out Akin was the nominee? Because she knew that things like this would happen.
He’s a coward. He ducked the responsibility of defending his view that there should be no exception for rape by trying to deny it ever happens.
