U.S. Rep. Todd Akin apologized on Mike Huckabee's radio show today for comments he made about rape, and said he will remain in Missouri's U.S. Senate race.
"I'm not a quitter," Akin said.
"We all make mistakes," Akin said, disowning his previous comments. "The many people who supported me know that when you make a mistake what you need to do is say you're sorry."
Akin said no party leaders have called him and asked for him to drop out.
"This was a very very serious error," Akin said.

And what effect did O’Donnell have on other races? None.
Way too many people overblowing and hyperventilating over the national effect of this mistake. Bunch of drama queens.
Forcible rape & statutory rape are two different charges.
McCaskill knew the caliber of fool she was dealing with clearly when she backed this guy with those ads during the primary. At this point, the seat is hers to lose again and I wouldn’t be all too shocked if this isn’t the last gaffe from Mr Akins that draws national attention.
Oh please.
Exactly
Romney and Ryan can’t come to the State and share a stage with the guy. Less worried about how Akin feels and more concerned if this is bad enough that MO would be in play again.
Well then, Mister Akin, perhaps we can find a (legal and humane, mind you) way to "quit" for you.
Since you choose to pull us conservatives into the quicksand with you, please be advised that you now have fewer friends and allies than Larry Craig.
No, this won't "blow over".
Your political career is in the (metaphorical) wood chipper. It's gone.
Man up and hit the road.
.
And NO GOP candidate is going to say they agree with Akin. So Akin will be put in the position of fringe lunatic that even 99% of his party disowns. He might be able to survive if he was from Wyoming, but not Missouri. Any independent support he had has probably evaporated at this point. They will leave the Senate race blank or vote for Claire.
I hope Brunner and Steelman have been getting calls today.
He’s not a quitter but he is a complete moron.
He should have set his ego aside and stepped down.
So, the Dems are “stuck on stupid”, and we’re “stuck with stupid”.
“Can the Missouri GOP force him to quit? Or are we at the mercy of him quitting?”
I do not think they can force him but even if they could as a practical matter, I would think they would need him to voluntarily step down otherwise it will get messy if he stays in as an independent or stays on the sidelines throwing barbs at the new Republican candidate being picked by “party bosses”.I read that after tomorrow he would need to go to court to have his name withdrawn voluntarily and agree to pay for the cost of printing new ballots.
Not to mention that pro-lifers and Republican can now be proclaimed as “pro-rape” thanks to this guy.
Cornyn now out with a statement strongly hinting that Akin should step aside.
Do it now or let this thing fester. He has no choice.
Rove announced his PAC is pulling out of MO.
Akin should take the hint.
and those who didn't support him because they over-reacted to his statements.
Obama already came out of his press-seclusion today to pounce on this, pulling out a full “this is outrageous” act, more or less blaming the Republicans and Romney indirectly. I’m sure Harry Reid, who’s only around because of an equally atrocious GOP candidate a few years ago, will have his input in this matter soon.
They’re going to run with this, and milk it for every thing possible all the way to Election Day.
He’s not a party leader.
I voted for Brunner and would again.
A Freeper feeding frenzy is quite the sight too...
And the GOP will now NOT take back the Senate. What a selfish idiot.
