Say goodnight, Todd Akin
Washington Post ^

Posted on 08/19/2012 8:01:18 PM PDT by Arthurio

No wonder Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill wanted to run against Rep. Todd Akin, even investing in his GOP primary victory two weeks ago by spending $2 million on ads that described him as “too conservative.’’ Missouri Republicans saw that as a plus, just as she’d hoped. But after his Sunday comment that “legitimate rape” rarely leads to pregnancy, even some in the GOP are calling for him to step aside.

The Republican lawmaker was trying to explain why he opposes abortion in cases of rape, but instead marched straight into the tar pits, where he will hopefully serve as a warning to future candidates that the reproductive info gleaned at summer camp may not hold up that well in TV interviews half a century hence.

Rape as a result of sex by force “is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

I am also inclined to believe that there are natural defenses that protect a woman from unwanted pregnancy via "foreign" sperm.

You may be inclined to believe it, but there is no scientific evidence supporting this. A study cited by the CDC showed a conception rate of 5% in women who were raped, with an estimated 32,000 rape related pregnancies. Further, this study reports estimates of 2000 to 5000 children born of rapes during the Rwandan ethnic cleansing. Any physiologic explanation you care to give for why the "natural defense" you mention didn't work there?

And there are studies that show a pregnancy rate of .5% from forcible rape. I can also point you to studies that show global warming is real and studies that show it is not. But I do know FOR A FACT that a woman has biological defends against foreign sperm when she is in a loving relationship with an active sexual partner. It seems to me all this man did was state the pro-life position, which BTW I am not in 100% agreement with. But if conservatives are going to defend liberal PC talking points I don’t think there is much hope for the future. Is what he said true? Well it might every well be true and I am not willing to hang someone on a maybe, particularly a non PC maybe.

If ovulation has already happened - will the body somehow “shut down” to prevent conception?

That's not what he was saying though.

What definition of rape are they using? Akin is talking about a specific kind of sexual assault.

Please link or cite the peer reviewed study or studies in reputable medical journals showing a pregnancy rate of .5% from rape, and showing the mechanism of the “natural defense” against impregnation from a rapist’s sperm.

What you don’t get is this has to with high school biology, not “PC talking points.” No one here is criticizing Akin for his position on abortion. We are criticizing his non scientific statement which will play very badly politically.

Further, this study reports estimates of 2000 to 5000 children born of rapes during the Rwandan ethnic cleansing.

One has to wonder how they came up with this number because the Hutus weren't raping, they were murdering. If they were raped, then how many of these were already pregnant before the rapes began, and the statisticians are just assuming the pregancies came from the rape.

Sarah Steelman came in third in the vote, hard to see how they could put in the third place winner to replace him.

There have been lots of linked posted already, the important ones are the pre Roe/Wad studies, before all this became to PC to even talk about. FYI the CDC study is garbage, since no attempt was made to verify the womans' claim of rape. Woman do claim rape when in fact there was no rape. The best data is from the pre PC era.

Still waiting to here from you on the documentation I provided about "friendly" sperm fighting "foreign" sperm. Something you told me was impossible.

Unfortunately, because of the nature of the public outcry, just being female could be enough to put her in. Sad.

So do you think the women raped in Rwanda during the ethnic cleansing were also not really raped? That the pregnancies there attributed to rape weren’t real?

What part of “...the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down...” is completely logical?

Got some actual facts om your side, or are you just winging it?

Winging it?

Try this for size:

"... one of the most important reasons why a rape victim rarely gets pregnant... is psychic trauma. Every woman is aware that stress and emotional factors can alter her menstrual cycle. To get pregnant and stay pregnant, a woman’s body must produce a very sophisticated mix of hormones. Hormone production is controlled by a part of the brain which is easily influenced by emotions. There’s no greater emotional trauma that can be experienced by a woman than an assault rape. This can radically upset her possibility of ovulation, fertilization, implantation and even nurturing of a pregnancy." [emphasis mine]

That quote is from Dr. John C. Wilkie, MD, OB/GYN

How 'bout you? Are you an ob/gyn by any chance?

trying to suggest that a woman’s body magically rejects a child conceived of rape

You use the word "magically." I would suggest that you are perhaps parroting the Left on that point. Akin did not say or even suggest anything "magical."

Please see this post for a quote from an OB/GYN on the complex but non-magical physiological phenomenon.

I like to get my facts from actual numbers, not opinion.

This study
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8765248

and this study
http://www.springerlink.com/content/wp5cnp43k6byxj4d/

demonstrate that rape in pregnancy is NOT rare and numbers in the thousands per year. Even if some are not “rape-rape” as Whoopi would say or “legitimate rape” as Akin would say. Further, the data seem to suggest that pregnancy is MORE likely after a rape than after a single incident of consensual sex.

Where does Dr. Wilke get his info? Ya know, Screamy Howard Dean is a doctor too but I wouldn’t take his word on a medical matter.

VictoryGal, I'm not going to get sarcastic with you, but you know better:
"Numbers" can be manipulated, are usually are manipulated, by anybody with an axe to grind.

So basically anything on this topic is going to be "opinion" -- i.e. an interpretation of numbers, or of experience.

Don't know about you, but I would put Dr. Wilkie's medical experience over Screamy Dean's anytime (and btw, how frightening is it to think of Dean wielding a speculum?).

If you want "numbers," check out how Dr. Wilkie deals with the numbers here on another thread.

In case I made a mistake constructing that link, here is another link to Dr. John C. Wilkie's (MD, OB/GYN) take on the numbers of pregnancies resulting from forcible rape.

MARK LEVIN has just announced that according to his call screener, the "vast majority" of callers want Akin to "not resign" from his candidacy.

What's more, Levin said that these callers to his radio show are "furious" with those of you in the media, bloggers, beltway types etc who are calling on Akin to resign.

Levin said this is a good sign -- that the grass roots are rejecting an "injustice" against Akin.

You linked a peer reviewed article in a reputable journal or a standard OB textbook? Funny, all I saw was your link for a “to the public” type article on sperm competition, signed by that well known authority “Dr. von Neumann has spent 20 years in the medical field. After spending months in the former Soviet Union, he co-authored IRON MAN PENIS - THE RUSSIAN SYSTEM with Igor Krynov, to help men get the most out of their sexual and enlargement potential.”

If that’s your idea of a peer reviewed article in a reputable journal, it’s no wonder you can’t discuss something without spouting vile attacks. I’ve posted before on one of these threads and I’ll say it again - NO ONE IS CRITICIZING AKIN FOR HIS POSITION ON ABORTION! Got that? We’re criticizing his incorrect statement on biology.
