No wonder Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill wanted to run against Rep. Todd Akin, even investing in his GOP primary victory two weeks ago by spending $2 million on ads that described him as too conservative. Missouri Republicans saw that as a plus, just as shed hoped. But after his Sunday comment that legitimate rape rarely leads to pregnancy, even some in the GOP are calling for him to step aside.
The Republican lawmaker was trying to explain why he opposes abortion in cases of rape, but instead marched straight into the tar pits, where he will hopefully serve as a warning to future candidates that the reproductive info gleaned at summer camp may not hold up that well in TV interviews half a century hence.
Rape as a result of sex by force is really rare, Akin told KTVI-TV. If its a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.

Then he should have said forcible rape for one.
And what ways does the female body have of shutting down a resulting pregnancy?
It takes an egg and a sperm to impregnate, the circumstances of the arrival of such doesn’t matter a hill of beans.
He isn’t correct, he’s a ****ing stupid ass.
If a woman is raped by a man, consequently impreganated by that man, and then does not want to give birth to the baby, then that is between her, the doctor, and God and no one else.
Except what he says is absolutely insane. It’d be like coming out and claiming that women can only get pregnant when they have sex on yellow bedsheets and not red. Its total quackery, you’ll see the opposite, with the media dragging out doctors, heck even FoxNews bringing out doctors, all of them reiterating that this guy is full of it.
This isn’t the first time Republicans have wandered into this territory, names that you’ll be hearing about in the next few days include Henry Aldridge and Stephen Freind, Republicans who wandered into the same territory and were made to look like fools for it.
Next up for this fiasco will be McKaskill at a press conference with rape victims who got pregnant.
If it’s possible to replace him tomorrow, he should be replaced.
“”If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
The “legitimate rape” isn’t even the worst part, its that this guy doesn’t understand basic female anatomy and came off trying to sound like he was an expert and instead sounded like a fool.
The left will use this as confirmation of their stereotype about old, white Republicans being clueless about a woman’s body.
If you've stuck your foot in your mouth, and can't explain your way out in several short sentences, politically speaking, you're doomed.
His mistake was starting down a path he wasn't prepared for. Ooops.
And if Nate Silver says he’s dead, he’s dead. Silver is the only analyst out there respected by both Right and Left. He called 50 of 51 states (incl DC) in 2008. Called pretty much exactly the 2010 elections. If Nate Silver says it, you dang well better listen.
A man who understands politics. Not only that, but you’ll see the same thing on CNN, MSNBC, NBC News, USAToday, The NY Times, The Wall Street Journal, doctors will come out and say how crazy this guy’s comments were, he’ll be lampooned by The Daily Show, in cartoons in newspapers all over the country, and other Republicans will be affected by this through affiliation.
Why? I just want to know why he felt he had to wander into this territory? Why not just reiterate your support for life and follow Ryan’s lead on the economy, why go down this road where other Republicans have publicly blundered, what possessed him to make that sort of ignorant statement.
and sad to say he will have to step down...but he is a Republican and only a DEMOCRAT COULD GET AWAY WITH JUST ABOUT ANY THING, YEP........ EVEN MURDER...
republican take responsibility
democrats never take responsibility...just ask Hussein...’not my fault’
Then I am a Conservative who advocates the murder of children. Rape should always be an exception.
The spelling was a simple mistake, jerk.
Thanks though for overreacting to a mild criticism of Palin. Most of the things you mention are standard positions for Republicans. Most support more drilling (yeah I know there’s more to it than that). Most support lowering taxes (or at least not raising them). Most support repealing Obamacare. Most claim to oppose gay marriage. Most claim to be pro-life.
So yeah, I don’t see much to elevate her above the rest.
I wish she would distinguish herself on something like immigration. Yeah, I know she supports the Arizona law which is a great credit to her, but on the bigger issue of unending mass legal immigration (which will lead to demographic oblivion for conservatives) she seems to be as worthless as any other prominent Republican.
So again, I don’t see much to distinguish her. It would have been better had McCain not chosen her; not because she cost him the election because I don’t buy that myth. Rather, if she had not been chosen then perhaps she could have become a successful two-term governor of one of the top energy producing states. That would have been a good resume to go for higher office. As it turned out, she’s just going to be someone you can project fantasies on about how she would have cleaned Obama’s clock, or something like that.
“He said that medical doctors told him that the female reproductive system shuts down when it is legitimacy being raped and Im sure that he will have a press conference with those doctors and he will clear all of this up in a few days.”
Words fail me.
Better yet, voters in Missouri should have thought about why McCaskill WAS supporting this guy. When a Democrat is giving money to support the candidate that you’re considering voting for, perhaps you should step back and think why that is.
Obviously she had his number all along.
Boy did you nail that one. Couldn’t agree more. Think she’ll throw in Gloria Allred too?
Nate Silver is no guru. He wildly understated the GOP’s margin of victory in 2010.
Dear Republicans:
All questions regarding rape, abortion, and lady parts are big piles of steamy dog doo that the MSM is begging for you to step in.
PLEASE STOP STEPPING IN DOG POO!
Are you kidding?
McKaskill will do everything in her power to keep this guy on the ticket.
LOL.....I was rolling in laughter at your comment. I just can’t comprehend some of this backwards logic employed by people showing their lack of an education. There are no doctors to support Akin’s position because it is a position that defies the boundaries of known logic and science.
There maybe debate about how much more difficult the stress of rape and hormonal fluctuations can have on becoming pregnant, but to come out and state that women can’t get pregnant as a result of rape because of some body processes shutting down is idiotic beyond belief.
Absolutely, the Democrats will sue and try to tie up the process to keep this guy on the ticket and to prevent a replacement candidate from gaining traction.
McKaskill=McCaskill ...pffft
