Why Race Is Still a Problem for Mormons
New York Times ^ | August 18, 2012 | John G Turner

Posted on 08/19/2012 9:25:25 AM PDT by greyfoxx39

.................In a June 1978 letter, the first presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints proclaimed that “all worthy male members of the Church may be ordained to the priesthood without regard for race or color.” Men of African descent could now hold the priesthood....

The revelation may have lifted the ban, but it neither repudiated it nor apologized for it. “It doesn’t make a particle of difference,” proclaimed the Mormon apostle Bruce R. McConkie a few months later, “what anybody ever said about the Negro matter before the first day of June of this year, 1978.”

McConkie meant such words to encourage Mormons to embrace the new revelation, and he may have solemnly believed that it made the history of the priesthood ban irrelevant. But to many others around the country, statements of former church leaders about “the Negro matter” do, in fact, matter a great deal.

The church would benefit itself and its members — and one member in particular, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee — by formally repudiating the priesthood ban and the racist theories that accompanied it.

-SNIP-

The priesthood ban had sweeping ecclesiastical consequences for black Mormons. They could not participate in the sacred ordinances, like the endowment ceremony (which prepares one for the afterlife) and sealings (which formally bind a family together), rites that Smith and Young taught were necessary to obtain celestial glory.

-SNIP-

Most Protestant denominations, however, gradually apologized for their past racism

It is clear that you are ignoring the facts that are being posted about the actual reality of his religion

I'm not ignoring the history of racial prejudice that infected his church.
Neither do I ignore the racial prejudices that affected many churches in the past.
Nor do I ignore the racial prejudice that underpins Obama's church in the present.

It appears the LDS have reformed and continue to reform.
As long as they commit no crimes and do not forceably convert or impose their beliefs
then frankly, I don't care what they believe. That is between them and God.

The NYT started it and it's spreading. Save your rancor for the stupidity of the GOPe running a mormon against a black man.

Hide YOUR head in sand.

And that means what to me? In Jesus time until only very recently, Jewish women were segregated from the men in the synagogue and could only advance so far up into the temple. Make something of that.

Make something of THIS!

"My brother got married in September. My father and I sat outside the temple and watched as the bishop and his wife, who barely know my brother walked out of the temple having attended the ceremony. They refused to look us in the eyes. We then greated other family members as they came out. It was awkward, humiliating, and extremely painful. No family should have to go through this."

Did a black Mormon die in Romney’s place in Vietnam, as Mitt was converting people to the religion and teaching that God was racist?

That is between them and God.

the election is between a mormon and a black man....sorry about that. And I DO mean I'm sorry that some other presidential candidate isn't going to be on the ticket.

Read my posts 74, 76, 101 and 107.

This is Bishop Mitt Romney’s personal story of racism and teachings, not history from the 1800s.

Right on wardaddy! This whole bunch of BS from some on the right trying to outdo the left about who is the biggest ‘racist’ is doing nothing but aiding and abetting the destruction of whatever cohesion and culture we have left. They are helping the Marxist destroy this nation. While these pissants run around in circles about it all & point fingers the Marxist continue to use race as a battering ram and garner political power as groups like the Black Caucus and Hispanic Caucus etc get ever stronger.

You have become that guy that I warned of in February. Romney’s people do it to Reagan also, but this is much more important.

To: surroundedbyblue
“”*Mormonism, as you know, is NOT Christian. Electing Mitt Romney will, I fear, bring a chastisement from God.*””

Unfortunately, for Romney to win the votes of Christians what will first happen, is that conservative writers, radio hosts, columnists, social conservative leaders, all of our talking heads, thinkers, and millions of rank and file conservatives and Christians will be drawn into the largest collection of, the most diverse collection of, the most creative collection of Mormon apologists, in history.

Mormonism will be daily rationalized, ways to smooth over Christian concerns will be thought of and delivered on the air waves, just as Hugh Hewitt and Michael Medved already do. Limbaugh and others will fall into a daily routine of countering and defeating Christian protests against Mormonism. New creative thoughts and reasoning will come from National Review, and Fox

The right will be sucked into becoming the foot soldiers of mainstreaming and rationalizing Mormonism.

You don’t know me, I am not a Mormon. This is about the truth. Liberals hate people who are religious, excluding muslims. Polls show Dems/libs are less likely to vote for a Mormon. This is nothing about victim hood.

Please, site what in the article is untrue,
and,
provide a source for your claim that conservatives march with the left in this country.
Unless, you are talking about those “conservatives” who are ignoring Romney’s record of liberalism as marching with the left.

I thought we were electing a president, not a high priest, pope or synod leader. If you wish to start an anti-Mormon website, please do so, no one is stopping you. We’re trying to discuss the presidential election, not Islam vs. Christianity vs. Mormonism. Mr. Obama is almost assuredly a Muslim, the religion/culture that has been at war with Western Civilization since the 6th Century, but I don’t see you posting a thread about him and his beliefs, which is very telling to me and a lot of other FReepers, believe me!

Please, post a link to any post which states someone hates Mormons.
This thread is about exposing Mormonism and its racist leanings as it relates to Romney.

You actually do not know anything about Romney and Mormonism, apparently, based on this reply.

***************************

I believe that you are exactly right, but isn't that one of the reasons that some of those among us object to Romney's candidacy? Isn't one of the issues of those who are knowledgeable about Mormonism this very point?

That Romney may be overly influenced by his beliefs and position in the Mormon church?

We’re trying to discuss the presidential election, not Islam vs. Christianity vs. Mormonism.

Feel free to ignore my threads and posts. I didn't ping you to this one.

I have been warning since '07 that if Romney was the candidate, the Obama campaign and media would provide evidence that it is utter stupidity to have a mormon run against Obama because of the history of racism in the mormon church.

You can hide your head in the sand, but the racist past of mormonism is now and will be a factor in November.

If you wish to start an anti-Mormon website, please do so, no one is stopping you.

I have as much right to post on FR as you do. As a matter of fact, there are thousands of pro-mormon sites on the internet..perhaps you would be happier with one of those?
