Moscow (CNN) -- There is no basic human right to barge into a church to make a political statement, jump around near the altar, and shout obscenities. But there is most certainly the right not to lose your liberty for doing so, even if the act is offensive.
But that is exactly what happened Friday. A court in Moscow sentenced the three members of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot to two years in prison.
In my two decades monitoring human rights in Russia I've never seen anything like the Pussy Riot case -- the media attention, the outpouring of public support, the celebrity statements for the detained and criminally charged punk band members.
The image of three young women facing down an inexorable system of unfair justice and an oppressive state has crystallized for many in the West what is wrong with human rights in Russia. To be sure, it is deeply troubling.

I don’t buy that for a second.
Was it free speech? Or disturbing the peace and possibly harassment?
To some, freedom of religion means the freedom of worshiping the government as God, and the freedom to imprison anyone who points this out.
Wondering what their own ideas on "free speech" are... Obviously, they don't believe in letting people worship in peace.
Free speech or disturbing the peace?
It was kind of like what Christ did with the money changers at the temple, a little bit of both I would say.
And because he's not pro-individual rights.
exactly
“Throw them in prison!”
Done. I don’t think there is going to be an OWS Moscow any time soon, and that is to the credit of the post-communist Russian Federation.
“But there is most certainly the right not to lose your liberty for doing so, even if the act is offensive.”
There’s no basis for this assumption.
Apparently there is no Christianity in post-communist Russia either. KGB controlled churches do not count.
Apparently there is no logic in BurningOak.
But by all means carry on in the random defense of secular disruption and trespass.
There's that unholy ghost again...
I wouldn’t compare what these three women did to what Christ did. They stormed into a church that wasn’t their place of worship, and they used blasphemy and profanity in their so-called protest.
BTW, have you seen their video for this “performance”? Here it is:

I don’t know. I’m leaning toward prison time just for producing possibly the worst piece of music in history. J/K ;-)
Freedom of religion is the first freedom. These three young women are just thugs denying freedom of religion to others.
This was in Russia. Our Bill of Rights doesn’t apply there. It barely applies here!
....Editor’s note: Rachel Denber is deputy director of the Europe and Central Asia division at Human Rights Watch.....
That says it ALL!!!!
“Human rightsers” have caused all manner of evil for DECADES!!!!
They CREATED Robert Mugabe! They demonized Lebanese Christians in the 1970s and 1980s, and Orthodox Christian Serbs in the 1990s and 2000s. The result has been the genocide of white Rhodesians and Matabele in the former Rhodesia, the creation of the Hizbollah muslim state in Lebanon, and the ethnic cleansing of Serbs in Krajina, Bosnia and Kosovo, with the creation of muslim criminal states in Bosnia and Kosovo!!!!
I FULLY support the Russian Orthodox and Serbian Orthodox Churches, which are the heart and soul of the Russian and Serbian people. I applaud Russia for making “human rightser” NGOs register as the foreign agents they are, and teaching the blasphemous, anti-Orthodox punkster women a lesson they will never forget!
The Church supports giving them a chance to repent, followed by a pardon. Fine with me. But “human rightser” NGOs have got to go!!!!
We may not like Putin—I don’t like a lot of what he does, either. But Putin came into power as the direct result of clinton’s nearly successful plot to destroy Russia forever under Yeltsin and the oligarchs. clinton’s Kosovo War was the last straw. As a result, the drunken, uber-weak Yeltsin put Putin into power. This may be thought of as yet another result of “human rightserism”!!!!
As for “real Christianity”—the Orthodox Church is the true Church established by the Holy Spirit in 33 AD. All the others are the result of schism. Rather than trying to make Russia protestant, we all need to return home to Orthodoxy.
>> When a church enters the service of the KGB it stops being a church.
Agreed. I think there’s an Amendment for that — not referring to the often misinterpreted letter.
So they did a less violent, more polite version of what Christ did at the Jewish temple?
Jesus is God on Earth in human form. The temple is HIS HOUSE!
“see Madonna breaking rocks in SIberia”
Pay per view? lol
BO: Your vicious hatred doesn’t belong here on a discussion list for normal people. The Russian Orthodox Church lost tens of millions of people under Communism.
Just for laughs, here’s the original video showing exactly what happened:

Aside from the profanity (in their language, apparently), they were causing a major disturbance. What would happen if a Tea Party protest did something like that?
