Memo for: Team Romney - Subject: The Candidates and Talk Radio
townhall.com ^ | Hugh Hewitt

Posted on 08/16/2012 2:29:36 AM PDT by tsowellfan

This is a long memo, born of two decades of frustration with the Beltway sharpies who run campaigns and are clueless about talk radio. There is no hostility here, just frustration with the invincible ignorance of the consulting class that wouldn't know the difference between a Thursday afternoon drive show in Denver and a late night dollar-a-holler stick in Flat Plains, Nowhere.

By way of background, I began my talk radio career in 1990. In the 22 years since, I have covered six presidential races. Before that I watched two presidential races from within the Reagan Administration, and one from the office across the walkway from Richard Nixon's in San Clemente and NYC.

I'm no Bob Shrum, thank God, but I know a couple of things about radio and running for president.

Here are some undeniable facts.

This race will turn on the results in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada.

Each of those states have between one and six major media markets, and each of those markets have at least one and usually three "talkers." Those markets are --from south to north and then east to west-- Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Charlotte, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Philly, Pittsburgh, Boston and Manchester, Cleveland, Columbus, and Cinncy, Detroit, Milwaukee, Des Moines, Denver and Colorado Springs, Albuquerque, Las Vegas and Reno.

There are just nine radio talk show hosts who broadcast in all or most of those markets every day for three hours each day and whose shows Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will find engaged but serious hosts who won’t pull stunts or create embarrassing moments for ratings.

Those hosts are Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levine, Bill Bennett, Michael Medved, Dennis Prager, Laura Ingraham, Mike Gallagher, and me...

You’d think that Hugh would know how to spell Mark Levin’s name by now.

I hope that Rush relaxes his "no live interviews" rule which he rarely breaks. I hope he puts Romney and Ryan on his show frequently during the remainder of the campaign. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of voters are listening to him at any given moment and this opportunity must be used to advantage.

Rush, this time around it's imperative your important show not be all YOU for three solid hours every day. Everyone has to be enlisted 110% in the cause if we are to survive as a nation after Nov. 6.....and that includes EVERY talk show host. Please make ample time available so that R & R can get their plans out to the public via your golden microphone without the MSM blocking the way with its blackouts, editing, distortions, omissions, biases, muzzles and filters.

Someone should tell Mr Hewitt that they will need to go on shows that actually have listeners. The Salem Radio Network has nowhere near the audience of TalkRadio Network, Citadel, or Premiere.

And, I think its good Rush does not do interviews (or very rarely does them). Being dependent on interviews means you have less control over your content, since many guests will not appear on shows that, say, cover Obama Eligibility...say honest things about Dems....or likes Sarah Palin. Rush has so much freedom over his show...the others need to pay attention

Beck, Levin, and Hannity have all been taken off the air in Wilmington, NC in the past couple of weeks and replaced with junk.

Does Hugh Hewitt actually have any listeners who are not members of his immediate family?

Mike Gallagher has said (or begged!) for Mitt Romney to come on his show. He talks about this repeatedly, that the Romney campaign stays away because of a perceived opinion against Mormons. Gallagher contends he merely stated that some may hesitate to vote for a Mormon, and that he as the Happy Conservative always wanted to support any Republican to beat Obama. That includes laying out what they’re up against so they can fight back.

Meanwhile, the #3 talk show host Michael Savage repeatedly bashes Romney (calling him Ramney.) He thinks the Romney/Ryan ticket is “milquetoast,” not much life to it. (His choice for VP was Allen West.)

So the talk show universe isn’t exactly an open arms territory to Romney. Nor is he crazy about them.

Moreover, I’m not so sure how many people it’ll actually convert. Rush says he ignores that consultant mentality overfocusing on “Independents” (a designation I’ve also grown to hate.)

There was an article in the Star News

Boorts is gone too.

Beau Gunn, general manager of Hometown Wilmington Media, the station’s parent company says “ “radio station that puts the facts out there instead of one who takes a side.”

The replacement programs are a joke.

Sounds like the GM is scared and going away from politics and gearing towards liberal. Seems as if he is trying to influence by omission.
