Americans Are Snatching Up Russian AK-47s In record Numbers

I'll never forget the first thing my ex-wife's father said to me: "Wanna go shoot an AK?"

I obliged.

It turns out Americans are turning to AK 's in droves to fill their home armories.

Russia doesn't mind, and neither do it's arms companies, like Izhmash, which are quickly shifting from military to civilian fabrication in order to fill all the orders.

Overall it's been a good deal for American enthusiasts, and for Russian investors, since existing laws banning Chinese imports essentially subsidizes Russian businesses.

Andrew E. Kramer of New York Times reports "And in the United States, Izhmash cannot be underpriced by Chinese competitors. The federal government has banned most imports of Chinese handguns and rifles since 1994.

Selling Saigas in the United States is integral to the enterprise’s evolving business model of making single-shot civilian guns to occupy workers and equipment in between government orders for fully automatic assault rifles. About 70 percent of the factory’s output is now civilian rifles, up from 50 percent two years ago. Of the civilian arms, about 40 percent are exported to the United States."

To be clear, we're talking about perfectly legal to import, and to own in some states, civilian versions of the AK-47. One shot, semi-automatic. These companies have cut back on their fully automatic, military versions in order to supply the U.S. market.

Due to the Second Amendment and America's widespread culture of gun ownership, the US market for civilian weaponry is among the largest on the globe. The AK has not only a violent history, .

Mine was great, before I accidentally lost it in a tragic boating accident.

As the owner of three Romanian AKMs: SAR-1 (7.62x39), SAR-2 (5.45x39), and SAR-3 (5.56x45 NATO) — I find them more than accurate. I put an ATN Ultra red dot sight on the SAR-2 and was getting double tap head shots on a steel target at 100 meters with it. An AKM with the universal rail and quick attach-detach mount (such as K-Var’s) can mount any kind of optic you want and they keep their zero.

Now, the AKM (stamped receiver AK) is not a tack driver like the AR, but so what? The AKM runs with minimal maintenance and the AR does not. (And before all you AR folks get your knickers in a twist, I have three ARs that I built myself and they are extremely accurate guns. But, they do require more TLC than the AKM.)

Check out Slickguns at this link. It is off line right now but will likely be back soon. At the top, plug in the caliber rifle you are looking for.

I keep reading this, and it seems pretty clear what we have to do: ban boats.

Many of my brother Marines on The Wall were killed by AK-47’s. It makes a distinctive sound when fired and whenever I hear one, my blood runs cold. I will never, ever own a ComBloc weapon.

Never tried an AK clone, but I do like the SKS rifle. Still partial to the AR though.

I assume that is Chinese prisoner hobbling. Cord or even rags would be used to bind the legs tightly above the knees upon leaving the final cell. This allows a prisoner to mince forward with little footsteps, but they would be 100% unable to break into a run. Makes perfect sense, in terms of the arcane art of safe prisoner handling. And the old cord or rags can just stay on the corpse, no bloody shackles to remove and clean.

Eugene Stoner would not be happy. He and Kalashnikov were rivals ... both took ideas from one another in designing their respective weapon systems. Stoner the M-16 Kalashnikov the AK-47.

Lost all of mine, but managed to get every one of ‘em back.

It’s a harrowing tale involving high-speed car chases, femme fatales, and of course, lots of gun play.

I was walking down by the lake a few months back and the strangest thing happened. I kicked what I thought was a stick in the mud, and it turned out to be a brand new Springfield M1A with competition sights, composite stock, and scope!

Shoots good too!

Now I wonder who would be silly enough to leave that there ;)
