The biggest problem victims have is self-medication. Long before they're ever diagnosed they get a snoot full of everything. Next thing you know they're really messed up, and this otherwise 'treatable' (but not curable) problem because a whole zoo of problems.

My prediction is he will reject treatment with the few drugs that work and will go back to his old ways pretty soon. Those feelings of occasional exhilaration are a major piece of it.

That’s exactly what I have seen, too. I can’t believe that I didn’t recognize the condition for what it was, mental illness.
I had a neighbor who has since been diagnosed, but not before just about destroying her family. When she would go on binges and buy things, cars, new carpet, you name it, she bought it, with no means of paying back the debt. Then she would take on three jobs to pay off the credit cards and start taking drugs to stay awake so she could work all three jobs, until she would literally collapse into screaming, crying fits and throwing everything she could pick up, all while leaving three teenagers to fend for themselves. Her husband was truck driver and gone a lot of the time.
