Screeners at Florida city can't keep up, keeping many out of event
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Hundreds of people were turned away Monday morning at a St. Augustine campaign stop featuring Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who defended his running mate's Medicare proposal.
The people were not admitted to the event after security screeners couldn't clear them fast enough.
At the event, Romney told Florida voters that he and Paul Ryan, tabbed as Romney's running mate on Saturday, both want to "preserve and protect Medicare."
Romney said President Barack Obama's decision to take $700 billion from Medicare for his health care law was "not the right answer."
Other than defending Ryan, Romney barely addressed Medicare while visiting a state with a large population of senior citizens who rely on the program.
Romney was on his first solo campaign swing since introducing Ryan as his running mate over the weekend.

The same thing happened at Sarah Palin’s rally in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania in October 2008...thousands were turned away because the Secret Service could not screen them fast enough before she and Todd arrived.
Romney cancels Monday visit to Orlando
Republican presidential hopeful will stop in St. Augustine, Miami
UPDATED 6:50 AM EDT Aug 13, 2012
ORLANDO, Fla. -
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s planned campaign stop in Orlando on Monday has been canceled.
Romney was scheduled to appear in an east Orlando neighborhood, but the visit was canceled on Sunday.
Romney still has campaign stops Monday in St. Augustine and Miami.
An official with the Romney campaign said Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan, will visit Central Florida on Aug. 18 or 19.
The time, location and other details of Ryan’s visit have not been determined.
well they better the “screening” fixed pronto, this is bad
This happened in Manassas, VA on Saturday too. The venue was packed to capacity,. But they set video outside of the perimeter in several places for people to watch and hear. The crowd was amazing.
why on earth start cancelling stuff? what is wrong with these people
I’ve only ever seen one candidate speak live and that was Gerald Ford. He didn’t have this problem.....
WFTV said Romney needed to rest up so cancelled the Orlando event.
I was there and it was a huge, huge event, much bigger than they expected, obviously. People were really thrilled about Ryan and just about everybody I spoke to said that they were only there because now they felt they really had somebody to vote for and a program to support, not just somebody to vote against.
The line went for blocks and blocks and a very large number of people never got in, but Romney was going to drive by and wave if possible, which I thought was nice.
I don’t particularly like Romney, but he did a good job at his speech and seemed a lot more focused himself than I’ve ever seen him. Rubio, Gov. Scott, and Pam Bondi were there - someone said that Santorum was there, too, but I hadn’t gotten into the venue at that point.
There was a tiny cluster of moonbats on the other side of the street screaming offensive things and trying to provoke a reaction (the usual Dem group: the “you’re taking away Grannie’s Medicare” crowd, the blacks chanting “Obama, Obama,” and even someone wandering around with a sign saying “Queer Liberation”). I wish our side would learn not to react, because of course as soon as someone shouted back at the moonbats, the TV cameras were there.
Other than that, it was a great day!
Thanks for the report. Glad you were able to make it. Sounds like a lot of people are enthused and engaged!
aww poor widdo fing
Bad? It’s unfortunate all who wanted to see romney could not but it is certainlyot bad. It shows an overwhelming public res;ponse to his visit and one which was not expected (this is a GOOD thing). They had enough on hand to clear thje crowd they expected to draw andthose expectations were surpassed.
Would you think it were better if like Obamugabe at his recent event, the plce was half empty?
Actually, this is a very nice problem to have.
Limbaugh is saying all the pundants who said Ryan would hurt Romney in Florida were obviously wrong. (I heard a local talk show host whining about that this morning.) Rush also is saying Ryan is going to force Obama to talk about the economy and that is the last thing he wants to talk about.
News reports say “exhaustion” is the reason for the cancelled Orlando stop. If true, I would advise the Romney camp to come up with a different reason next time. Supposedly the Orlando stop is being rescheduled later in month with Ryan.
what a wussy excuse
well you don’t want to turn people away, they aren’t inanimate objects, like “oh we have too much furniture” if they went to all the trouble to be there, you darn well better take care of them
Rush is an idiot. If Beck were saying something I might listen to that. But really, they are all just in it for the money
This has happened several times already and it is starting to look like the Secret Service detail that Obama sent Romney is behind the whole thing. Romney would do well to ask for a detail of his choosing. Just sayin.
