'The London 2012 Olympics have ended with a spectacular musical closing ceremony and the official handover to the next host city, Rio de Janeiro.
The three-hour show featured some of the biggest names of British pop from decades past, including the Spice Girls, George Michael and Elbow. Games chief Lord Coe said: "When our time came - Britain, we did it right."
The official Games flag was handed to the mayor of Rio before the flame at the Olympic Stadium was extinguished.
President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, who declared the Games of the 30th Olympiad closed just before midnight, said: "We will never forget the smiles, the kindness and the support of the wonderful volunteers, the much-needed heroes of these Games. "You, the spectators and the public, provided the soundtrack for these Games. "Your enthusiastic cheers energised its competitors and brought a festive spirit to every Olympic venue."
At the close of the ceremony, watched in the stadium by the 10,000 athletes and 80,000 spectators, the flame was extinguished in dramatic fashion. Each nation will receive one of the cauldron's 204 petals.
As fireworks went off above the east London stadium, the Who performed My Generation and the venue became a sea of red, white and blue confetti.
The finale, which began with Big Ben chiming, paid tribute to UK music, fashion and culture.'

I just watched to catch a glimpse of Tom Daley. ;)
Demonic was the only feeling I got. Turned it off.....
my thoughts too, even my kids and their friends are here and think this is awful.
John Lennon and his song, then the homo who got caught having his fecal sex then Lennox who looked to be , well Im not sure what she was supposed to look like.
Spice girls were about the best as they looked great and I’m no fan of them
just waiting for the fireworks
Didn’t think it could be worse than the opening ceremonies.
Congrats Britain, you won the gold medal for the biggest waste of money.
If it wasn’t for Duchess Of Cambridge and Prince Harry you would have been unmemorable.
My bride and I were watching Falling Skies on TNT, and we would flip to the Olympics during commercial breaks. When we saw Russell Brand riding around singing something from Willy Wonka, she said, “I feel like the premise of Falling Skies is more based in reality than this Olympic crap.” LOL
I’m enjoying the closing - a lot of fun. Eric Idle is a gem!
Hmm, good point just made on TV...Rio’s games will be only one hour ahead :^)
Daughter made me watch a 4 year old anime instead. It was better.
This is why I would never want the Games coming to Philly — it would be an enormous money pit.
That, and the fact that every athlete would need to be issued an up-armored HMMWV and Kevlar...
It was too boring for anyone to hang around for the good parts, if there were any.
Don’t forget.........imagine no possessions....
Oddly enough, the liberals never offer to voluntarily relieve themselves of said possessions
I thought the ceremony was AWFUL especially when the had the dancing nuns pull up their skirts.
Technically I’m watching, its being recorded, started 36 minutes ago and so far nothing but fluff and commentary, I’ll just let the DVR record awhile before I view it so I can skip all the trash and commercials.
And then on to Rio!
Doesn't matter, NBC will still screw up the coverage, delay showing major events, and have endless feel-good "stories" on rather than actual olympic event coverage......
And the masses received their bread and circuses again....should keep them from rioting for a while, or at least until the bills for the circus come due.
After seeing what Rio is offering for the next Olympics, I think I’ll skip their opener. Pele was the highlight.
The London closer was better than the opener, but a bit to chaotic. Spice girls did well, and so did Stomp.
Loved Eric Idles “Always Look On the Bright Side of Life”.
pleased?? LMAO- why; did you not think Brian May was not good??? or are you tone deaf???
Just what I was thinking. If it got any more la-di-da it would be a gay pride parade.
What?! The Olympics are going on? Where? When do they start?
panem et circenses
