'The London 2012 Olympics have ended with a spectacular musical closing ceremony and the official handover to the next host city, Rio de Janeiro.
The three-hour show featured some of the biggest names of British pop from decades past, including the Spice Girls, George Michael and Elbow. Games chief Lord Coe said: "When our time came - Britain, we did it right."
The official Games flag was handed to the mayor of Rio before the flame at the Olympic Stadium was extinguished.
President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, who declared the Games of the 30th Olympiad closed just before midnight, said: "We will never forget the smiles, the kindness and the support of the wonderful volunteers, the much-needed heroes of these Games. "You, the spectators and the public, provided the soundtrack for these Games. "Your enthusiastic cheers energised its competitors and brought a festive spirit to every Olympic venue."
At the close of the ceremony, watched in the stadium by the 10,000 athletes and 80,000 spectators, the flame was extinguished in dramatic fashion. Each nation will receive one of the cauldron's 204 petals.
As fireworks went off above the east London stadium, the Who performed My Generation and the venue became a sea of red, white and blue confetti.
The finale, which began with Big Ben chiming, paid tribute to UK music, fashion and culture.'

I wish they did a show with Dr. Who travelling around British history and culture instead of the crap show they put on at the Opening and Closing.
Dr. Who while a generations old UK trademark doesn’t have the pomp and romp as it used to have in the last couple of years. Its been on and off again the last couple of years, here in America you just don’t see it much if ever on anything other than BBC America, you never see episodes from the past, I mean classic episodes from the 80’s.
But its one of my favorite TV series, never seen anything worth watching in America even coming close, yes they failed to utilize such a typical British icon as Dr. Who.
Overall the Brits did a darn good job. I’ll give them credit where its due and I fervently hope Obama will take it with him to grave the day the Olympic committee told him to take a long jump off a short dock.
LOL. The women I work with are gushing over this guy. As a man I still don't know why women even like us men. Hairy, rough skin, etc. Women are soft, smell good, not hairy..I can't figure out why everyone, men and women just don't love women. I don't get the female to male attraction... (just kidding)
I am sure your brave son has a higher opinion of the British than you do. I am not angry at your WW2 comment, I just find it sad and laughable.
Even if the ceremonies were mind-churningly awful, the Games themselves were fantastic and a great success.
I had forgotten about Chicago’s bid! Good call!
Yet another embarrassment for the US starring BHO in front of the entire world.
That’s what I got in my “spirit”. I only speak for myself.
And bloody funny.
You think rock music has backward satanic messages?.
Just curious.
The film dosent attack Christianity (Python said then and now that Jesus’s teachings were so great you couldnt find fault with them).
It satirises religion and more to the point, the dangers of messianic fervour.
It did, and quite well. I'm tossing around a screenplay idea which is kind of a tribute to it called Life Of Barack.
Don’t take it personally, we’re much harder on our own Super Bowl Halftime shows.
Are you with the Judean Peoples’ Front or the Peoples’ Front of Judea?
Olympic Opening Ceremony Occult Symbolism
Entertaining reading for a good laugh at Religiously-inspired paranoia and apophenia. Lots of stuff on YouTube too.
> Jesuss teachings were so great
Muslims even say this.
What do you say about Jesus claiming to be God, and Christians’ belief that He was killed for the sins of the entire world, and rose from the dead?
Monty Python proclaimed that message?
Judean Peoples’s Front?.
F*ck off.
LOL.
