The spending plan proposed by Rep. Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, Mitt Romney’s pick as the Republican vice presidential candidate, has drawn strong opposition from federal employees.
Under the proposed House Republican budget, which Ryan sponsored as chairman of the Budget Committee, savings from the federal workforce would total $368 billion over 10 years. The two-year freeze on basic federal pay rates, scheduled to expire at the end of this year, would be extended through 2015 for a total of five years.
“The Path to Prosperity,” as the budget plan is named, also calls on federal workers to make an unspecified “more equitable contribution to their retirement plans,” which means higher costs to employees. Additionally, the federal workforce would be cut, through attrition over three years, by 10 percent, which equals more than 200,000 positions.
Because the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Justice and Homeland Security have so many employees, the majority of the eliminated positions would come from these agencies, all of which are related to national security.
The budget document says its plans “reflect the growing frustration of workers across the country at the privileged rules enjoyed by government employees.”
Ryan’s budget justifies the employee-related cuts, saying “it is no coincidence that private sector employment continues to grow only sluggishly while the government expands: To pay for the public sector’s growth, Washington must immediately tax the private sector or else borrow and impose taxes later to pay down the debt.”

That’s only because you are not afraid of exposing reality. You’re also probably one of the 10% that is competent. Competent people do not fear change.

As a federal employee, his plan is reasonable. Actually, he needs to incorportate civil service reform so bad employees can be fired more easily. First thing they should do is revoke executive order that established unions in the federal government

You speak the unfortunate truth. I think Ryan was the best choice, but as with any politician, reality tempers my enthusiasm, as much as it does yours.
As long as they don't need Wisconsin's electoral votes for their margin of victory, per the 12th Amendment.

If WaPo wants to trot out that cloud of crap as an argument, I've got a prize example of Gummint Employee expertise in action on my resume:
I was working on the B-1, setting up testing on the early model crew ejection system parachutes and got to give a GS something-or-other posing as Expert In All Things a short lecture on the limited value of compressive strain measurements in parachute harness.
What I actually said was, "Just how do you suggest we're supposed to push a damn rope so we can get that compression?", but I was having a bad day and had not yet fully transitioned from Navy E-6 to civilian Engineer.
The best the average GS can do to promote National Security (as well as just about everything else you can name) is Stand By and Keep Your Mouth Shut Tight while the grownups take care of the deal.
Otherwise, all they've historically done is F*** up everything they touch.
You're right. Of course, to Ryan's credit he's one of the few who has actually created a detailed plan to address entitlement spending. Count that as another point in his favor.

Disgusting if true. In case folks have forgotten we have thousands of veterans from two wars in need of care for the foreseeable future. Hitting the VA for budget cuts is scandalous.
The single biggest problem for government at all levels (school district, city, county, federal) is the total compensation cost of their employees.
Check your local election campaign contributions, and you will find government employees, hiding behind “police/fire/teacher groups.”
And the winning candidates usually owe them big time, and then renew fat contracts, increase benefits, pensions, etc.
Budgets won’t be balanced wwithout big cuts, and Ryan is telling the truth, about this critical topic.
Maybe people will listen because of his age. He is younger than Obama, and should appeal to those not expecting free rides.

They also get to shop for their own health care, which lowers costs because there would be more competition if health care was consumer-based.
Many would choose an HSA program which offers tax deferments and credits also.
And who would fill those machines with paper or ink or tell them to pocess? These things don’t happen automagically.
I don’t consider teachers as government workers. Besides, I am in a right-to-work state. We don’t “do” unions.
