U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
No women’s basketball thread here but sure nice to see Becky Hammon lose!
wasn’t Jackie Charlton’s brother name Bobby?
That’s really cool to hear Ax. I have a major soft spot for Yorkshire in general, and Leeds in particular... Holidayed on the Yorkshire coast a few years back. I hope you have had fish and chips in Whitby :)
And, Leeds. It’s more for my dad’s generation I guess, but he has told me all about those great teams, and I really wish for they day when they return to the premier league. As far as I know the crowds at Elland Road are still great despite their position in the league system, AND they hate Mancs more than us even it seems :P
So go Leeds :)
I am glad to hear that fond feelings are still there after being stationed in the UK.
I did my undergraduate in Brisbane, Australia and it was always fun when some U.S. Navy ship visited. At least the U.S. Navy did their bit for international anglo diplomacy XD
And, I haven’t been to the kop yet. Did you go back to when it was still standing? I have only been to Anfield once and was sat (Northern English grammar) at the main stand.
...think she got the last laugh.
Yes, Bobby was Jack’s older brother who played for Manchester United, alongside George Best and Dennis Law.
I left there in 1974 after five years. I haven’t been back since, but Yorkshire will always have a special lplace in my heart. My daughter was born at Harrogate General Hospital. We were fortunate to have traveled the length and breadth of Merrie Olde England. My buddies and I followed Leeds United to parts of the UK that very few tourists ever see: Stoke, Wolverhampton, Burnley, Manchester or Liverpool. Only London stadia I got to were Wembley when Leeds beat Arsenal in the 1972 FA Cup final and to Stamford Bridge when Leeds beat Chelsea. Big part of my life was England. And no, I HATE fish and chips!
The most impressive thing, is that the US has taken, or are playing for Gold in virtually every major women’s team event:
Gymnastics (Won Team Title)
Water Polo (Playing for Gold today)
Soccer(Playing for Gold today)
Basketball (Playing for the Gold medal)
Volleyball (Playing for the Gold medal)
Tennis Doubles
Won 2 out 3 Women’s swimming relays
Favored to win all women’s track relays
I think the only team sports they won’t get Gold are:
Team Handball
Field Hockey
Rowing
What the Hell is she doing playing for Russia? That's not right.
Great game anyway. Still glad I taped it!
We got a gold in women’s eight Rowing.
BTW What the heck happened to Germany?
I suppose Germany could be doing a bit better, there have been some disappointments but also some nice surprises. Germany is currently #6 in Olympic gold medals, ahead of France and Italy.
If we take the USA population and current gold medal count as a benchmark:
USA has 3.84 times more population than Germany and 3.9 times more gold medals, which is on par.
Let's compare that to Germany's neighbor, Poland (who are currently way down at #28 on the medals list, behind Cuba and North Korea):
USA has 8.16 times more population than Poland and 19.5 times more gold medals, LOL!
Germans I know, are enjoying what has been achieved thus far. I hope someday Poland becomes a sporting nation because there should be some good potential there.
(sorry about the LOL. It’s not polite to openly laugh about such a thing.)
..there ya go, tolcha. Jersey girl Carli Lloyd ran her heart out.Great team effort!
Poland’s men’s volleyball team was a major disappointment. They had the best fans of the entire games.
That's probably because they don't have many black people in China...
