Jay Carney: I don’t speak for Reid, but Romney could resolve this by releasing those tax returns

Via the Washington Free Beacon, why on earth is the White House press secretary wading into a dispute related to the presidential race? I'm sure GOP press secretaries have done that too for Republican incumbents but I don't like it from either party. Carney's supposed to be a liaison between the president and the media so that the public can stay informed about what's going on with the executive branch. The only questions he should be fielding vis-a-vis Romney are when Team Mitt makes a charge about the administration’s policies that requires fact checking. The One's paying Ben LaBolt for a reason, right? Let him be the one to navel-gaze on camera about the proper way for Romney to respond to Reid's low-rent smear, not a guy who's ostensibly some sort of public servant tasked with providing citizens with basic facts.

As for why Romney hasn’t yet released the returns, does anyone believe this?

Mitt Romney and his aides believe that — despite loud and nagging calls for him to release his tax returns — the candidate simply cannot afford to release his taxes now, even as some aides wish he would have put them out six months ago or more.

With less than three months to election day, the Romney campaign has passed the “point of no return,” as one Republican operative close to the campaign put it, beyond which there isn’t enough time for the media to digest the tax returns before the public starts to pay attention to the race.

“The complaining for more and more returns and the stories about how rich he is get old after a few weeks, but there aren’t a few weeks left,” the operative said. “Now we’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing and hope it isn’t too painful.”

If he put them out now, the press would spend two weeks buzzing about them and then everyone’s focus would shift to the conventions. In the meantime, Romney would have announced his VP pick and there would be new jerky little distractions to keep the media busy. By the time of the debates, when voters are really tuned in, no one would care anymore. Unless there really is something damaging in there that he’s hiding, the suspicions he’s creating by not releasing them are probably hurting him worse than releasing would. But I don’t know; maybe the dynamics of this now are such that if he produces the returns, he’ll be seen as “giving in” to Democratic pressure and some conservative voters will be mad at him. Just seems hard to understand why he’d let this be a liability if the truth is that it isn’t one.

I think Romney should walk out to meet the press carrying a large briefcase. He then states, “This briefcase contains all my tax records for the last 10 years. I will give you this briefcase as soon as Obama signs a release for all his college transcripts. After all, I'm sure he has nothing to hide. Right?”

Releasing his tax returns would not in any way “solve” the problem for Romney. It would just make things worse. Every line in his tax returns would be gone over by the Obama Administration and the MSM. There would be demand after demand for additional information. The Romney campaign would be on the defensive for the remainder of the campaign and spend countless man hours researching and responding to one false accusation after another.

Republicans should demand that Obama release the school records and other information he is hiding and lying about. They should offer nothing in return.

Reid should be charged with a felony under the privacy laws that prevent the unauthorized release of confidential IRS information.

Romney should publicly declare that he doesn’t deal in hearsay, or anonymous sources. A first year lawyer would know that, a Obama has claimed he was a lawyer once, or at least played one for the public.

Next the Rats will be asking for Romney’s Facebook password as some employers are now doing.

Where is Dingy Harry these days? All of a sudden I'm not seeing his ugly face in the MSM.

Maybe he's in Vegas working on some kinda business.

I think Romney should just let this thing fester for a little while. Democrats have nothing else on him and will just make fools of themselves. Especially Reid, let him make stupid statements.

I was at first in favor of the quid pro quo of Romney's tax returns for Obama's records but I'm more of a mind to have Romney hold fast. The 'Rats look terribly desperate in this and it serves to call the attention of those who had given the issue a pass before to the missing Obama records. Romney should let it ride and let the 'Rats immolate themselves with their public thuggishness.

reid could solve this even MORE easily by disclosing his ‘source’. As far as I know, reid and/or his ‘source’ are not protected like they would be if reid was a ‘journalist’.

There is no "source".

There never was.

It's a ploy by the Democrats to try to trick Romney into giving them more ammunition to hit him back with - obviously they've got nothing on him now, and are desperate.

Ever notice that lately when Harry Reid speaks that Jay Carney’s lips move?

LOL - but as a matter of fact, I have. I think it's interesting that the Obama campaign tried to distance The Won from Harry Reid's wild and crazy accusations and then doesn't even say "Duh!" before letting Obama's own press secretary do the same thing.

I know. I was being a little tongue-in-cheeky. To my mind this eminently qualifies for a lawsuit against reid, et al. His first pronouncement was to a reporter. That is malicious libel.
