Santorum, Rand Paul, Jeb Bush To Speak at GOP Convention
National Journal via Yahoo News ^ | 08/07/2012 | Reid Wilson

Posted on 08/07/2012 9:54:52 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Former Sen. Rick Santorum gave Mitt Romney a run for his money during the Republican primaries. In return, Santorum will get a major speaking role at the Republican National Convention, organizers will announce Tuesday. Convention organizers will also announce they are giving major speaking roles to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin and Sen. Rand Paul, the son of Rep. Ron Paul, another of Romney's more dogged rivals.

Handing Santorum a prime speaking slot is a hat tip to his underdog presidential campaign. The under-funded, little-known former senator notched a surprising upset in Iowa, where his brand of social conservatism played well among activists. Santorum has been aggressive about wanting a speaking slot. "I have no doubt that we'll have some role at the convention," Santorum told CNN last week in an unusually forward statement.

Picking Paul looks like a particularly elegant solution to what might have been a thorny problem. Ron Paul's campaign didn't gain traction with voters, but his supporters understood party rules better than other campaigns, giving them the opportunity to win delegate seats at county and state party conventions. Had Paul won a majority of just one more delegation, he would have been allowed to be formally nominated for president, which could have been a hurdle for organizers trying to arrange an event that will serve as a Romney coronation.

The four speakers are the second wave of convention headliners to be named by the organizing committee. On Monday, the committee said South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, Arizona Sen. John McCain, Florida Gov. Rick Scott and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would address the convention.

This is OUTRAGEOUS!!! This should be a deal breaker, I have always argued that for the sake of the unborn/Christian values ie The Supreme Court... But now with John Roberts perhaps a lefty, everything is unclear, is he even pro life??

Sarah should be given a key speaking roll, if not The lead roll.

I think Romney has fallen for the Ann Coulter (tramp) line...”The base does not need to be energized” She said that on Sunday, I almost fell off my chair

OK.

1) Wish but can't have Palin - she herself and others took her out.

2) Looks like America is reeling from potential knockout blows by the enemy within.

3) Nevertheless, notwithstanding the above, because of what I believe the next thirty years or so holds (I honestly believe we'll have another round of prosperity), I believe that somehow, some way, God by His grace will pull America (and therefore the world) out of the fire - maybe for one last time. This would indicate to me a retreat from socialism and another round of deregulation and cuts in government spending and taxes.

Can't wait to see how it happens. I wait with expectancy and, by His grace, the ability to respond in my part in all this.

I think she should speak.

And I think the trade off is going to be an official endorsement, just like all the others have been willing to do.

Please, please, Lord, let me skip what is shaping up to be a nauseating event.

Will the decentralized tea parties hold convention(s) or rally(s) somewhere maybe at the same time? Will Palin speak somewhere else?

Or will the tea partiers take over the convention and put in [Palin (I wish)]. Is it possible to pray for Palin to change her mind after seeing that not only her family, but all of our families are at risk?

I wish fat boy Jeb Bush would get lost. George W is doing a good job as quiet ex-president. The last thing the GOP needs is another Bush in the news. Their time has come and gone.

Here is the actual quote:

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus hopes Sarah Palin will speak at the Republican convention in Tampa.

“I think a lot of her and hope that she does speak,” Priebus told Greta Van Susteren on Fox News on Monday night.

Rick Santorum--deserves a spot based upon his performance in the primaries. Might be interesting to hear.

Jeb Bush--yawn

Mary Fallin--don't know/no opinion

Rand Paul--actually has decent ideas. Worth hearing.

1st Wave:

Nikki Haley--interesting

Mike Huckabee--Huckster/con man to the core, windbag....yawn

John Kasich--good speaker; has great ideas

Susana Martinez--no opinion/willing to listen to anyone new

John McCain--please spare us...old ideas, no fire in his belly when running against the most openly communist Democrat opponent in history. We don't need anymore go along to get along lamea$$ repubs. Rush Limbaugh was right about this guy.

Rick Scott--don't know... he's welcome if he can deliver Florida

Condoleezza Rice--I guess she has appeal if you are a Mumar Quadaffi type (but he's dead). Personally, I think she's boring.

I didn't see Sara Palin's name. Why isn't she invited to address the convention?

I'm grateful Newt Gingrich is not going to be a speaker. What a self important windbag.

Where is Palin’s name?

Jeb Clampett Bush is going to speak, but not Palin.

Looks like the RINO hall of fame.

>Anybody else feel like a red headed step child?

LOL - I hear ya, dog.
I feel the same way, but I have made up my mind that this election is too important to be concerned with me.

And so I will vote for Mitt without hesitating.
Well, maybe a little hesitation. :)

Romney did Zero to reach the conservative base.
In the past, others gave “lip service”.
Not even lip service from Romulus.

If Romney takes a hard right turn 3 or 4 weeks before the election, it means his internal pols indicate conservatives
will not be turning out en mass and he will be desperate to reach out to them. Maybe he thinks he can win with-out conservatives. We shall see.

I'm shocked Senator Sanctimonious will speak at the convention after ensuring Romney secured the nomination. /s

Jeb Bush? Really??? I realize he's the former governor of FL, host of the convention, but must we endure Jeb?

A Rand Paul spot was probably secured by his father but he's fairly sharp (less crazy there). It'll be good to hear what he has to say.

And you know this how? Are you an insider, part of the process, because not all of the speakers have been announced.

No, NO! We can't WAIT until we have the facts! We have to attack first! Never mind that Obama, it's Romney who must be defeated!

The GOP convention speaker list is looking more like a freak show, than a serious convention.

We are not alone. Mark Levin was speaking about the line up during his radio show on monday. There is an internal power struggle going on between the republican party “loyalists” aka as the establishment and the Tea Party (patriots). We will not be ignored and Romney better head the rumbling which will only get louder.

They need to add Sarah Palin’s and Rush Limbaugh’s names to that list.
