Pick a pro-life VP, Christie tells Romney

ASPEN, Colorado, August 6, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - New Jersey governor Chris Christie has advised Mitt Romney to steer clear of a vice presidential pick that supports abortion.

Christie, a strongly pro-life GOP figure thought to be a possibility himself for Romney’s VP slot, told reporters after a meeting of GOP governors Wednesday evening in Colorado that he thought it was possible the candidate would pick a pro-choice running mate - but that it wouldn’t be a good idea.

“Do I think it’s possible? I think it’s possible,” said the governor, who has won notoriety for his own tough stance against state funding for Planned Parenthood, of a pro-abortion pick. “Do I think it’s likely? No. And do I think it’s advisable? No. I wouldn’t do it.”

“If you’re voting for somebody at the top of the ticket who’s pro-life, and vice presidents often – not always, but often – wind up succeeding to leadership of the party, if not leadership of the country,” said Christie. “You know, people want some consistency in that regard.”

Although most names on Romney’s speculated list are pro-life, such as Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, some have guessed that the pro-choice former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to be a viable option as well. However, Michael Falcone and Amy Walter of ABC News noted Monday that Rice was among the GOP leaders firmed up as a “headline speaker” for the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and suggested that means Romney’s team has passed her by.

Pundits hope the long-awaited GOP running mate will be announced sometime this week.

Meanwhile, the presidential race has been increasingly colored by strife over social issues, a conflict heightened this month with the implementation of the HHS mandate forcing religious groups to provide birth control in employees’ insurance plan.

President Obama’s reelection campaign released a new television ad over the weekend attacking Romney for opposing abortion, showing women who describe his stance as extreme and antiquated.

As if he could pick a pro-choice Republican as a running mate. Christie is insulting conservatives on several levels here.

If milt wants a balanced ticket, he’d better pick a Pro-Life VP.

If Mitt wants a balanced ticket, he’d better pick a pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, anti-socialized medicine candidate.

Pro Life / Pro/Choice should be left up to the States!

Marriage issues should be left up to the states!

Bingo! There is ZERO chance that Romney will pick a pro-choice running mate.

Christie is just trying to set the bar so low that picking someone like Portman can be spun as a big concession to conservatives.

Left up to the states??? We need a conservative Supreme Court to roll back Roe v. Wade, a federal dictate. We need a president to push Congress to ban federal funding of abortions and stop the abortions embedded in socialized medicine.

Leave marriage up to the states?? The federal courts are going to force homosexual marriage down our throats. All of us. They will call it a federal civil rights issue that overrides states rights.

Just wait to see until there is a divorce battle between a traditional marriage state and a gay state, or a church fighting for the right to hire whoever it wants. Big Brother and the liberal judges and bureaucrats will side with the gays.

Sorry, my libertarian friend. Social issues are national issues, whether we like it or not. We need a conservative president to fight for these issues. If we “turn it all back to the states,” as you suggest, we will be retreating. We will show the white flag on the culture wars.

The liberals will roll right over us.
