Greenwich goes dark after tree takes out transmission line

A tree fell on a transmission line in Greenwich on Monday morning causing 99 percent of the town to lose power, according to Connecticut Light & Power.

The area was hit hard Sunday night by thunderstorms, which caused a number of downed trees, one of which fell on the major transmission line Monday morning.

CL&P officials said the line is in close proximity to railroad tracks operated by MetroNorth and Amtrak.

The utility company said it was working closely with town, state and railroad officials to carefully remove the tree and complete repairs that are needed.

...

In response to the town-wide power outage, the Greenwich first selectman declared a state of emergency and the town opened its Emergency Operations Center.

Residents were being warned that traffic lights may not be operating, and MetroNorth trains were not running west of Cos Cob Station.

Cooling centers were also being opened so residents can beat the heat.

The horror. It's 81 with low humidity in Greenwich and they might suffer a few hours in the dark. In reality, I bet the majority of homes in Greenwich have generators.

If by generators you mean a team of hired hands to wave giant palm fronds as commanded, then yeah, Greenwich has plenty.

Your comment smells OWSy.

Losing power is a pain in the ass for the poor, the rich and the in between. Why dismiss its impact for anyone?

Ban trees. Nobody can tell when one of them might go berserk.

If they had power they could read this generator thread.

LOL.

Being fairly familiar with Greenwich I can assure you that these houses also have "people of color" waving those huge fans that you see in pictures of British administrators in India in the 1860's!

This is the fault of CL&P I can’t believ they would allow a tree to grow that close to a major Electrical transmission line.

These power utilities should be find for their. Stupidly every time the power lines are knocked down by a tree. It’s just being negligent.

It’s aimed at the MSM.

During Irene and the Oct. Snow storm, the MSM spent most of their time the Hartford area and the surrounding towns finding every resident and elected official who demanded a immediate fix. Conveniently, they ignored the northern half of the state which had 100% out in most towns for several days and the residents who worked tougher.

I’d bet “more than one beer” that CL&P wanted to trim that tree, but were prevented because it would “destroy the stately beauty” of said tree.

Just try and cut down a large tree in Greenwich, I dare you, just try. And if it’s on a private landowners property youll be dealing with “Old-growth landscaping” issue for years.

It’s like this for these folks; “don’t touch my trees but make sure there are no outages”. It’s simple, really.

Your probably right, but at the same time trees should not be allowed to grow anywhere near an electrical utility right of way.

It’s just stupid. The better thing to do would be to place the lines under ground.

Underground utilities would avoid this problem, but that ain’t cheap and the same people who wanted to protect the stately oaks (or whatever they were) also don’t want to pay the higher utility rates to put the lines underground.

Okay that made little sense. - The poster points out that the utility wanted to trim but PC & enviro correct policies prevent this.
Its much like the roaring wildfires in the West that are allowed to spread because of Forestation policies preventing the trimming of underbrush and clear cutting.

I agree with you but such people seem to have that power now so why blame the utilities?

That notwithstanding, your comment about underground utility lines is interesting.
We do have areas here that were so developed, but the price to maintain them is staggering!
Believe me, you wouldn’t want to pay those bills!
I have seen no new underground lines installed here since the 1980s.

Alright, I see your point there.

The MSM cares about the rich areas because they and their friends live there.

The only care about the suffering in poorer areas if there is a Republican politician or policy they can link to the difficulties.

Greenwich has a poor section, Cos Cob. I hope Greenwich’s citizens are enjoying it because if O gets re-elected, we might all be in the dark.

Calling Cos Cob “poor” is a bit ridiculous, don’t you think?

If you are comparing Cos Cob to Bridgeport, No, but to some areas of Greenwich, YES!
