Cruz: Tea party ‘overwhelmingly’ behind Romney
Washington Times ^ | 8/6/12 | By Sean Lengell

Despite some worries among tea-party activists regarding Mitt Romney’s conservative credentials, Mr. Cruz predicted the movement will “overwhelmingly” support the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in November.

“The grass roots are energized because the absolutely highest priority in the country in November is to defeat Barack Obama,” Mr. Cruz said. “I have spoken with literally thousands and thousands of tea-party activists — I have yet to meet a single tea-party leader that is not going to vote for Mitt Romney and work hard for him.”

While polls show Mr. Romney is significantly trailing President Obama for support among Hispanic voters, Mr. Cruz said Hispanics should feel comfortable with the Republicans because their values are fundamentally conservative.

Mr. Cruz — whose father immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba — added that Hispanics are about “hard work and responsibility” and don’t like to accept government handouts.

“In my life, I never once have seen an Hispanic panhandler,” he said. “Because in our community, it would be viewed as shameful to be out on the street begging.”

When asked on Fox News if Mr. Romney would be wise to pick a tea-party-supported conservative like Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida or House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate, Mr. Cruz said both men would be “terrific” choices but declined to speculate further.

I know that makes logical sense, but you don’t sell or expand your Conservative base unless you explain why it’s a great ideology. For all intents and purposes, our leaders are embarrassed by Conservatism.

They don’t think it is a sound enough belief system to win others by mere appeal and logic.

I honestly don’t understand that. If you don’t think our beliefs are solid, then switch to a party whose beliefs you do have faith in. Then let us get back to cleaning up this mess.

By going the route of gender and race based appeal, we are denigrating Conservatism. It certainly deserves better...

When I used you in that last post, it was a generic you, meaning individual members of the party in general.

At the risk of being a broken record the R party has a nominee who is a certified liberal, or at least a RINO, who has taken on a bunch of positions that he cant defend because he doesnt believe in them. To make matters worse we are lectured that we must defend and promote him (I cannot) anyway or we all die, as with Mccain in 2008.

You must know that the Romney/Rove/Mccain team has decided that the election cant be won defending some of those 'conservative' positions he took.

This is a recipe for disaster. So when Romney fails that is not a reflection of conservatism when (if) conservatives join him?

Our local radio station was replaying Levin from last night going after Romney for not taking a stand on Chick-fil-A. I am not going to specifically recommend that he do that right now but this is an indication of the problem above. Romney cannot defend these things because he doesnt believe in them.

First GWB, then McCain, now Romney. disaster.

You can add Dole to that list too.

You’re also right about Romney not defending things he doesn’t really believe in.

This is a real mess. We have a president that just about everyone thinks needs to go, and then you have Mr. Luke Warm Bucket of Horse Sweat as an alternative.

By rights, we should have about 25% turnout this general election.

What a disgusting situation.

My view exactly.

How about that list of RINOs for the convention and Walker was not even on it at least in that one post? I may not be able to watch it this year.

The official conservative token will probably be Ryan who has accomplished exactly zero this congress, who proposed the 'idea' that Romney cant explain but endorsed.
