NASA put out the calls for instruments and other gear in 2004, and serious testing was happening by 2008.

Just found a cool picture on Wikipedia showing a comparison, think it was mentioned in another thread.

I tried to look up the Curiosity inception date, when the mission planning began, and I couldn’t find it.

I’m tired so I’m not being very creative in my search parameters.
