Poll Position: Will today’s Chick-fil-A ‘kiss-in’ be successful?
AJC ^ | Aug 3 2012 | Kyle Wingfield

Posted on 08/03/2012 9:56:24 AM PDT by scottjewell

The “buycott” of Chick-fil-A on Wednesday produced what the company will only describe as an “unprecedented day” for business. Today, we get the counter-protest...in the form of a “kiss-in” by gay couples angry about remarks made by company president Dan Cathy.

Will it be as successful?

Boycotts have a revered place in American history as an effective form of protest, in large part because of the role they played in the civil rights movement.

Lately, however, the tactic’s record is much more spotty. Looking at one list of current boycotts, I don’t see many, if any, that I’d count as successful.

Now, a “kiss-in” isn’t exactly the same thing as a boycott; I have no idea how many of the reported 15,000 people nationwide who say they’re participating in today’s protest will buy a chicken sandwich while they’re there. But it is similar in that it’s an attempt to shame a company into a certain action by applying public pressure.

My own theory about this is that activists are reaching a point of diminishing returns when it comes to pressuring corporations, in large part because they have succeeded in pressuring many companies into some form of “corporate social responsibility.” ...

So according to my theory, even setting aside the Cathy family’s obvious and longtime commitment to their beliefs, a company like Chick-fil-A feels less pressure to acquiesce to one group’s demands because it can point to a long list of corporate “good behavior.” The company and its owners stood on higher moral ground, so to speak, to start with.

...

Just vote in the nearby poll and explain yourself in the comments thread below.

ADDED: I doubt this kind of action, while unrelated to kissing, will engender much sympathy for the cause of today’s protesters.

I went to our local Chick fil A ( south hills of Pittsburgh) this noon to get lunch and support them if the Homos showed up.
The place was FULL of regular customers and the drive thru line was twice around the building. Asked the gal who took my order if this were a normal Friday and she said they have been steadily swamped ever since Wednesday.

Once again the left gets a lesson in unintended consequences.

I’ll bet there are lots of people who had never been to CFA before who now are steady customers.

I heard that gays plan to infiltrate the chain. They are planning to get hired and convert it to a homosexual environment. I suggest a test before hiring anyone. A pot of hotdogs and a bag of buns. Ok applicant, pair em up. I guarantee the homos will have hotdogs with hotdogs and buns with buns. “Oh I’m sorry, you failed our employment exam!”

This “kiss-in” will have the same effect as prancing naked down the street in a parade: It just pi$$es normal people off.

"It’s for the fops."

Does that make today a Chick-fil-A fop flop?

Guess the limp wristed leftards should define what would make this successful.

If I’m at a Chik-fil-A with my wife and very young kids, a kiss-in isn’t going to sway our opion of the restaurant or its’ owner. Rather, I’ll simply be insulted by these protestors acting as such in front of my family and suggest they go find a closet to crawl back into.

Further, if they think they will drive business away from Chik-fil-A the exact opposite is true. I’ll support a business that provides a good product and know that the owner’s share similar values as I.

They may not even piss anyone off - one news channel(TX) already saying its a no show. Unless they are waiting for tonight, they’re not even showing up.

“Guess the limp wristed leftards should define what would make this successful.”

Down in Miami, it has been raining cats and dogs on their parade.

One might even assume from that that G*d meant “abomination” and is washing away some of it.

However, if true, count on EPA and the Dade Enviro agencies filing pollution suits. But, but “they are Libtards! Yes, but they are on short funding thanks to Obamanation’s abominable economy. Thus the Abominations could face fines from Obaminables.

A pox upon them, all!

A couple of news stations in different areas sent reporters to several chickfilas and all reported no-show.

Looks like the kiss-in people are “chicken”.

On a thread about it, there was a flyer indicating it would be 8 PM EDT, 5 PM PDT, so it’s not time yet.

Yeah, maybe they are waiting for tonight because their numbers are so low, they need a concentration at one hour. Still, they did call it “National Same Sex Kiss In Day @ your local Chick Fil A” - kind of misleading. As I said several areas sent reporters and camera crews out and they were baffled at the no-show.

I’m quite sure the TV reporters called their buddies as soon as they got back to the studio, and have been told when to show. Spontaneous, eh?
