Probably by "sucking up and kicking down". It's more prevalent, IMHO, in American business than you think.
Probably thought his academic awards put him on a higher and more privileged plane than ordinary mortals. Instead what it shows is a narcissistic bully who believes his higher intellectual position negates the necessity of keeping the mores of civil behavior.
