Aiken Chick-fil-A swamped with customers supporting chain restaurant

Aiken Public Safety is directing traffic from Whiskey Road onto East Gate Drive where motorists are attempting to turn into the Chick-fil-A parking lot in support of "Chick- fil-A Appreciation Day."

Police Capt. David Turno said the franchise hired two officers earlier this week in anticipation of a large crowd.

"Traffic is backed up, but the officers who were hired are out there directing the traffic," he said.

Similar back-ups are being reported in North Augusta and in Atlanta.

Steve Robinson, Executive Vice President of Marketing for Chick-fil-A, said in response to the overwhelming numbers of customers flooding the stores across the South, "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day was not created by Chick-fil-A. We appreciate all of our customers and are glad to serve them at any time. Our goal is simple: to provide great food, genuine hospitality and to have a positive influence on all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A."

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared today national "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," in support of the company's president, Dan Cathy, who told the Baptist Press last month that the Atlanta-based company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family."

That unleashed a torrent of criticism from gay rights groups and others, who have called for boycotts and efforts to block the chain from opening new stores, according to the Associated Press.

One of my local Chick-filA locations. (There's 3 or 4 within 15 miles of me.)
I bet this is happening all over the US!
I saw a news story yesterday from LA or SF or somewhere that said something along the lines of 'Chick-fil-A has really stepped in it and will learn better.'
Yeah? I think they're learning something today, and it sounds like this - "KA-CHING!'

Man, I love America and I love the American people. Screw the coasts. Real America is the greatest country the world will ever know.

I figured there was no way I would get into a Chick-fil-a in Houston for lunch so I stopped in on the way to work and bought chicken biscuits for the office. It was crowded then with about 14 employees and 2 managers already on duty.

Crown America, owners of the West Manchester Mall in York, Pennsylvania barred reporters from speaking with people in line and even from taking notes:

I support private property rights but you don't check First Amendment at their door.

Some of the Twitter comments:

Pretty repressive, if you ask me.

I’m sure that Chick fil a appreciates all the people supporting them but if I was working there I think I would have taken a vacation day today. it’s crazy.
