370 Million Indians Swelter In Heat After Power Fails
Associated Press ^ | July 30, 2012 | Ravi Nessman

Northern India's power grid crashed Monday, halting trains, forcing hospitals and airports onto backup power and providing a dark reminder of the nation's inability to feed a growing hunger for energy as it strives to become an economic power.

While the midsummer outage was unique in its reach - it hit 370 million people, more than the population of the United States and Canada combined - its impact was softened by Indians' familiarity with almost daily blackouts of varying duration. Hospitals and major businesses have backup generators that seamlessly kick in during power cuts, and upscale homes are hooked to backup systems powered by truck batteries.

Nonetheless, some small businesses were forced to shut for the day. Buildings were without water because the pumps weren't working, and the vaunted New Delhi Metro, with 1.8 million daily riders, was paralyzed during the busy morning commute.

"This will obviously get worse," said Subhash Chawla, a 65-year-old retiree who took the Metro once power was restored. "Unless the Metro has a separate power supply, it will be chaos in the future."

The grid feeds the nation's breadbasket in Punjab, the war-wracked region of Kashmir, the burgeoning capital of New Delhi, the Dalai Lama's Himalayan headquarters in Dharmsala, and the world's most populous state, poverty-stricken Uttar Pradesh.

You wont believe the ruckus some people created when they tried to put up a nuke-plant for power in India.. and guess what some funding for the “ruckus” came from some liberals in other countries!!

And we are allowing these filthy people to manufacture and export medications to the USA.

We are also allowing companies based there to do drug testing. How on earth could we ever trust anything from this cesspool.

Stop all immigration from India before the USA starts to look and smell like this.

First time I saw that site’s pics, I had nightmares. And yes, we’re importing meds, supplements, products etc from that subhuman shithole, and many others around the world, notably even much more that corrupt, criminal, filthy sewer of China. Good God, what are we thinking?

Can’t imagine the whole United States going without electricity for any length of time. Is this a sigm of things to come?

This is just a faint taste of what would result if an EMP ever exploded over the U.S.

Actually India is much better prepared then US to handle extended power outages. Due to frequent power cuts most essential services are actually have gas fired generators for back up power supply. In US an extended power outage can be a nightmare. Heating systems goes down. Stores and gas stations are closed because registers wont operate.

In contrast life in India goes on quite smoothly even during an extended power cut.....with the minor inconvenience of not being able to use the fan during the summer.

India is a large country, one that differs dramatically from one region to another. And Indian immigrants have done a good job integrating into American society - where did your family come from? Ireland? The Scottish highlands? Eastern Europe? There were plenty of places from which immigrants came to America where living conditions were described in similar ways, and yet they assimilated well. Indians too have integrated - heck, the median income of Indians in the US is close to double that of the median white income. Clearly they’re doing something right.

Wow! Well maybe you should start bringing all the clean, White people from Europe. And unlike the filthy Indians, they would no doubt be very “hardworking” and never live off benefits, I am sure.

No I am not. I thought India wasnt such a bad place but maybe I am wrong. The master race of clean, white people from Europe is better then filthy Indians.

The power failed again after restoral. ZH via Times of India is saying 670 million without power. That's around half the population or by comparison it would be like The US, Canada and Mexico combined. Check out the pictures showing India before outage then after outage. Starting to look like NK. Anyone noticed some web sites acting up or outright down. The the US off-shored a lot of IT work to India such as record processing, Call center help lines etc.

I never once said "white" or "master race"; THOSE ARE YOUR WORDS, ravager! Don't put that crap into my mouth! I called India a shithole, based upon the pics in that link. Post #24 made the other comments. Try to make the obvious distinction between your words and mine. 'Kay? Can you handle that?

Yes, it’s coming here. The reason they all lost power is because they gave up their coal fired power plants.

1/10th of humanity lost electricity over a hoax.

In 1980 I met a Bombay native, who my company was sponsoring for a work permit here. (Super guy, btw, a Zoroastrian, Chartered Accountant, had been working in Tehran when the Shah lost power to the Khomenie revolution).

Anyway I asked him about upper-middle-class life for his family in Bombay. He said running water was only available for a few hours per day, so you filled the home water tanks when it was.

Then water was available for use, from gravity-tanks mounted up high.

Etc.
