It has been said that India is a dreadful place.
My son lived in Korea for two years, China for five years and traveled extensively throughout Asia.
India was the worst place he visited and was exactly as you said - just dreadful. Overwhelming poverty and filth on a huge scale.
Interestingly, he said Vietnam was probably the best ... unbelievable scenery, great food and the friendliest people.

Dreadful place with plague and all? How many times have you actually been to India?

The trains are actually quite safe when you consider the fact that it carries 14 million passengers everyday and covers a total of 2 million kilometers.
