Martin Luther was given a trial, though it was not what he expected.
He had expected to be asked specific questions and be given the chance to explain his views.
 
Instead, he was shown 20 of his books, piled on a bench, and asked if he would recant the heresies they contained.
 
He asked for time, was given a day, and returned the following evening to deliver a stirring statement that concluded:
Unless I am convinced by proofs from Scriptures or by plain and clear reasons and arguments,
I can and will not retract, for it is neither safe nor wise to do anything against conscience.
 
Here I stand. I can do no other.
 
God help me.
