The 30-second ad portrays King as a free-spending liberal, calling him the "king of spending," while Maine's former governor says the ads are negative attacks by outside money "trying to influence Maine voters."
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has begun airing TV ads in Maine taking on independent Senate candidate Angus King.
The 30-second ad portrays King as a free-spending liberal during his years as Maine's governor, calling him the "king of spending.'' The ad says government spending skyrocketed under King, and that he left the state with a billion-dollar shortfall when he left office.
King is running against Republican Charlie Summers and Democrat Cynthia Dill in November's election. The chamber, based in Washington, is endorsing Summers.

Very well done. A bit of a surprise...I thought this race had been written off as a lost cause. I guess not.
Liberal democrat King (pretending to be an "independent") leaves opponents in the dust in fundraising.

Not sure, but I doubt it.
We did have another couple of “independent thinkers” though. First Margaret Chase Smith, and then Bill Cohen (not to mention Sue Collins).
