SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Reuters) - A shootout at a California shooting range ended a bizarre hostage drama during which three gun store employees found themselves staring down the barrel of one of their own rented rifles, police said Tuesday.

Sgt. Anton Morec of the Santa Clara Police Department said the aspiring gunman, 21-year-old Richard Gable Stevens, was subdued after tense moments Monday evening at a shooting range and gun store in this town 30 miles (48 km) south of San Francisco.

"He intended to go out in a blaze of glory," Morec said, noting Stevens had accumulated more than 100 rounds of ammunition for his rented 9mm semi-automatic weapon.

"It certainly looks like he intended to take a lot more people out."

Morec said Stevens arrived at the National Shooting Club Monday evening and rented the rifle for target practice. The club allows people to rent a range of weapons for use on its own shooting range.

After several minutes on the range, however, Stevens returned to the club's gun store and shot at the ceiling. He then herded three store employees out the door into an alley, saying he intended to kill them, Morec said.

Unknown to Stevens, one store employee was carrying a .45 caliber handgun concealed beneath his shirt. When Stevens looked away, the employee fired, hitting Stevens several times in the chest and bringing him to the ground.

The employee kept his gun trained on Stevens until police arrived, Morec said. When Stevens refused to comply with police demands that he show his hands, he was shot again with several rounds of rubber bullets.

Armed citizens have stopped mass murder several times. It is usually downplayed or spiked by the MSM.

This is now Reed’s Indoor Range - used to take visitors from Japan there when I worked for a Japanese company around the time this happened. They loved shooting.

I took a few dozen Japanese engineers and military personnel out shooting when I worked at Yuma Proving Ground. They loved it as well. Very polite, conscientious, and disciplined people.

They were obviously up and comers. The Japanese hierarchy did not choose just anyone to come to America and test their weapons.

I worked at letting them know that most Americans were armed and knew how to shoot.

National was great.

The attitudes at Reed’s stink. Prefer Target Master.

I never feel comfortable around the guys at the front counter.

Agreed. I loved the sporting goods store across town though. Was sorry to see it close.

I used to shoot there at least once a week before I returned to the United States in 2002. I bought a couple Pythons there, a pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 41, a Walther PPK, and probably a couple others.

Like someone elso posted, these stories get spiked. See “Armed Citizen” column in the NRA magizine. My favorite!

Hey, remember the shooting a few years back with the church security guard? She saved a lot of lives that day, poor thing.

Certainly there are more current examples.

The one in California in Santa Clara seemed to have been flushed down the memory hole.

When Jeanne Assam put down the mass shooter at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs it was 2007.

There have been others, but when you stop someone, it is hard to show what *might* have happened.

Try Sportsman Supply on Camden Ave. near Hwy 17. There’s a gunsmith on site there as well.

“Armed citizens have stopped mass murder several times. It is usually downplayed or spiked by the MSM.”

Not only that but has there ever been a SINGLE incident where gun owners defending themselves started “wildly shooting each other and unarmed bystanders because of confusion and inadequate training”? Leftists have been saying that to scare people.

I have not seen that, but there was a mass shooting incident in New Mexico where an armed citizen ran to the sound of the shooting. He shot the shooter center mass with his .45.

The shooter had an AK clone and body armor. He went down, then came back up and shot the .45 shooter several times killing him. The police arrived, and got involved in a car chase with the perpetrator, who was eventually shot and killed by a policeman with a rifle.

That is the only case that I know of where the shooter kept on fighting after being hit, even with body armor on. It started as a domestic.
