Comptroller Susan Combs on Thursday added her name to the long list of Texas elected officials who are backing Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in his bid for the U.S. Senate.
Dewhurst has been relentless and focused on conservative principles, said Combs, who credited the lieutenant governor for putting Texas in a strong economic position.
Fighting for principle is not always easy and it is not always visible, Combs said at an Austin news conference. I will tell you that actions speak a lot louder than words.
The low-key news conference at Run-Tex on Riverside Drive stands in stark contrast to the big-crowd events that Dewhursts runoff opponent, Ted Cruz, will attend today and tomorrow. Tonight, thousands of activists will pile into the American Airlines Center in Dallas to hear Cruz along with radio commentator Glenn Beck, U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint and other tea party leaders. On Friday, Sarah Palin will headline a Cruz rally in The Woodlands in advance of Tuesdays vote.

Earlier on Thursday, state Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston posted on his Facebook page that he would vote for Dewhurst. A conservative radio host, Patrick had declined to endorse in the race but did speak up several times to defend Dewhursts conservative record in the Texas Senate.........
Patrick added: Cruz is a bright and talented lawyer who is also a fiery orator. I respect those who see it differently. Im not going to be critical of Cruz. He may well win and if he does we will rally around him in November. Since both Cruz and Dewhurst have said they differ only slightly on the issues in the end its a matter of style and background.

Dewhurst won the Jimmy Carter “co generation Lotto.”
He made a butt load of money on the backs of North Texas electric ratepayers.
He claims he earned it.
Rick Perry likes Dewhurst because he has lots of money.
Perry would like a rich rat turd.
Man, this is turning out to be a real slugfest! I want Dewey down and out in the first round.
Dang pogo, your insight is 20/20 tonight!
I remember sharing my gut feelings and observations about Perry early in the primary. I'm in Texas, and read through his phoney baloney 'conservatism' a long time ago. I was honestly shocked that so many of my fellow Texans shot me down over it. They had to have seen the same things I had.
Now he's vindicated my perceptions in spades. Despite the fact that the Tea Party gave him their unbridled support in his last run for Governor, and not an insignificant amount of support for his presidential bid, he comes out and supports his crony - a man who's done everything in his power to thwart the will of conservatives in Texas.
I never did understand the support for Perry among conservatives. Guys like him and Dewhurst, are establishment machine politicians, who are far out of alignment with patriotic, Tea Party conservatives.
Someone who can't even spell the acronym, RINO, probably doesn't know one when they see one.
For people not in the know, please read the following:
Dan Patrick (for whom the Tea Party was practically creates) has always been quite clear about things work in Austin. If you don’t suck-up to THE MAN, you get nowhere.
In Dan’s case, he has to suck up to the governor - which is why he was in New Hampshire last winter trying to help him in his bid for president (as if he had a prayer). Now he has to suck up to Dewhurst, who, almost certainly, will still be running the TEXAS Senate in January.
Patrick has made it more than clear what he thinks about Dewhurst (who is Governor Perry’s bitch in the State Senate for killing conservative legislation), and it’s NOT pretty. But Dan will have to deal with him in January, and hence the supposed endorsement*.
*but not a real endorsement, as it doesn’t even show up on Dewhurst’s website.
I've never seen Perry as anything but a leftist political hack who changed parties for political gain. My mayor did the exact same thing. He was a lifelong democRAT and switched parties because he thought it would help him politically. The same can be said of Perry. Thankfully, Perry continues to torpedo any chance he may have had of ever becoming POTUS and will stay in Texas where he belongs.
Dewhurst supporters are very very very touchy right now....every comment is deemed an attack or slight.
I smell fear.
Oops, trying to post from a cell phone. I do know, however ,when I see someone wearing their ass up over their head.
Dewhurst can also be blamed for the TSA Anti-groping bill failing in the regular session.
Dewhurst made a 2007 speech favoring a guest worker program for those here illegally and then claims he never supported a guest worker program in one of the debates.
Dewhurst outright denied ever supporting a payroll tax but has a press release praising the passage of a bill that included that option and even stated as such.
Says someone who claims that a Lt Governor who helped kill the anti-Sanctuary city bill and every bit of anti-illegal immigration legislation, isn't a RINO.
Rent a clue on why Ted Cruz has all the Tea Party support, and Dewdrop has NONE.
Dewhurst is politically adios.
I did say I was voting for Cruz. Part of the “sanctuary city” debacle was because there is supposed to be no such thing as a sanctuary city to begin with.A city cannot trump state and federal law on immigration.Any bill in favor of or against would be bogus.
Texas Legislature Online - SB9
There was some discussion about attaching it to another Senate Bill right at the end, but the author of that bill didn't allow it.
There is plenty of other ammo(see post #51 for a few items) to use against Dewhurst, but I think the Cruz campaign went too far on the sanctuary city bill and invited a response from most of the Texas GOP Senators.
If you can look past Dewhurst's despicable ads, then he would likely be a party line vote like Cornyn. Not a RINO, but also not someone who is willing to stick their neck out to hold the line on spending or defend the Constitution.
That's why we need Cruz.
“Texas, however, has one of the most powerful Lt. Governor offices in the nation, and these GOP establishment politicians are merely doing basic CYA in case Dewhurst pulls out a win. If they were to cross him and he won, he could cause them a lot of problems.”
I do not see how Dewhurst could cause much of a problem if he won. Seems like he could cause more problems if he lost and remained as Lt. Govenor. Having the Texas Lt. Governor against you is a lot worse than having a junior U.S, Senator against you if you are a Texas politician.
Much of the support may be just returning a favor for help given over the years in supporting or killing various pieces of legislation.
But who in the dickens cares? Just be sure you vote for Cruz if you are a Texas voter. Two of us in my household will do just that next week. We will also support Dewhurst in November if he beats Cruz next week, but here’s to that not happening.
Susan Combs is no surprise; she’s part of the good ol’ boy network in Austin. But, I’m really disappointed in Dan Patrick.
Yup, DewCrist IS just that bad. What do you expect when liberal Democrats get elected to office as Republicans like him and Perry ?
Combs is a former aide to Hutchison, but she surprised many when she endorsed Santorum after Perry withdrew from the 2012 race.
