Accused movie theater gunman James Holmes is spitting at jail officers so frequently that at one point he was made to wear a face guard, sources told ABC News.
Holmes' odd behavior was first seen by the public when he appeared in court Monday looking dazed, alternately bug-eyed and nodding with his eyes closing.
But ABC News has learned that his loopy court appearance was just one of several bizarre behaviors.
In the hours after his arrest Friday for the massacre at the Aurora, Colo., movie theater, Holmes stared at the wall in the Arapahoe Police Headquarters with his eyebrows twitching.
Holmes told police he was the fictitious Batman villain, the Joker, and when cops put evidence bags over his hands to preserve traces of gunpowder residue, he pretended the bags were puppets, law enforcement sources told ABC News affiliate KMGH-TV in Denver.
Since being held in the Arapahoe County Jail, Holmes has been spitting at the officers so much, they are forced to use a spit guard on Holmes when they have to move him.

He’s just trying to act crazy so he’ll get lenient treatment.
If ABC is reporting this, it must be true. Or not...
They need to stick this guy in a room with some thugs doing hard time, and have the entire staff take a long lunch.
Let him spit all he wants, just don’t replenish his fluids. If dehydration is good enough for Terri Schiavo, it’s good enough for this sh!tball.
Probably so. In fact, his whole set-up looks a bit too organized for a crazy person. I'm betting he's a disaffected type with an axe to grind against society who in the end didn't have the co-jones to off himself.
When I was covering the police beat, spitters were said to have “fallen up the stairs.”
Anyone can fake being mentally ill...it just depends on if they can maintain the behavior or not. This creep needs to be found guilty and sentenced. Then, the LIBs can give him mental health “treatment” until her is “cured” at which time he should be brought to justice. This guy must havbe read about the ploy of the guy in Sweden who killed all those people and then was found mentally ill.
A nice fist sandwich with fat lips afterglow could make it rather uncomfortable to spit.
The Joker spits? Who knew? This punk is in dire need of a therapeutic whoop ash.
2+2. This POS is toying with them to build an insanity defense. These are all acts. He’s had this plotted out for months and knew he’d get a chance to go head to head with court appointed psychiatrists and try to fool them. I wouldn’t believe any of this garbage for a minute.
His knowledge means he's going to look as crazy as he wants to be and will probably have his lawyers blame it on big pharma. They have a track record of encouraging addiction and often give under-the-table incentives to encourage doctors.
Opiate addiction often starts with unnecessary prescriptions written for the above reasons. I've seen these legal heroins prescribed for things like mole and wisdom teeth removals. Often ruining very good people as they surrender to the pills and send all their remaining assets to big pharma. They are the true cartels. Since 2008, addiction and injury rates from Rx opiates alone have exceeded that of ALL illegal drugs combined!
I also think we might see something resembling “Clockwork Orange”. This guy would be made into the victim, get treated for the addiction, get a huge settlement from big pharma and walk the streets laughing someday.
Yup.
Seems it would be hard to spit with a broken jaw.
Typcial “occupy” behaviour. He’s likely one of them.
Do we believe ABC News about *anything* anymore?
Just wondering.
Zip tie his hands behind his back and then pull his shirt up over his head. Problem solved.
Yup! A good old fashioned wood shampoo would set his mind straight and tone down his behavior.
