There is no “full independence” in the EU unless one is out of the EU. As part of Denmark, it’s one of the EU’s “overseas countries and territories”; the EU is not going to let that go, especially with its strategic proximity to the US and Canada, never mind the minerals there.

Various parts of North and South America (mostly islands) are already in the EU—St. Pierre and Miquelon, French and Dutch Caribbean islands, French Guiana, the Falkland Islands (known to Obama as “the Maldives”), as well as Greenland. But if Greenland becomes independent it would be the first complete nation-state in the Americas to belong to the European Union.
