While many on the right fear that Constitution Party presidential candidate Virgil Goode might just draw enough votes in his native Virginia to tip the Old Dominion’s 14 electoral votes from Mitt Romney to Barack Obama, the former six-term congressman made it clear he doesn’t care.
Goode, in fact, feels that “in many ways, for conservatives, it might be better to have Obama as president next year rather than Romney.”
The 65-year-old Goode spoke to Human Events last week as he and his supporters were in the process of gathering the 10,000 signatures they need to submit before the Aug. 24 deadline to qualify for Virginia’s November ballot. Founded by Conservative Caucus chairman and venerable conservative leader Howard Phillips, the Constitution Party is so far on the ballot in 17 states. Right now, Goode told us, the party is making attempts to secure ballot positions in other key states such as Arkansas, Alabama, Iowa, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania — the home state of the Constitution Party’s vice presidential nominee Jim Clymer.
But what has clearly set off alarm bells among conservatives lately is the scenario of Goode making the ballot in Virginia — where he won the 5th District U.S. House seat as a Democrat, Independent, and Republican from 1996 until his narrow defeat in 2008. Polls show the state, which Obama narrowly carried over John McCain in 2008, seesawing between the president and his Republican opponent in 2012. A just-completed Quinnipiac Poll showed Obama and Romney tied among likely Virginia voters, with each getting 44 percent — down from Obama’s 47 to 42 percent edge in the same poll in June.
Of particular concern to Republicans is Goode’s strength in his home turf: the Danville-Charlottesville area that he represented in Congress and previously as state senator. Four years after he lost the closest House race, the former congressman remains popular in his former turf. In addition, his hard-line stance on immigration, strong emphasis on limited government and focus on following the U.S. Constitution seems more likely to woo Virginians who would otherwise vote for Romney than those inclined to Obama.
“If I’m on the ballot in Virginia, I could cost Obama a lot of votes — possibly as much as or even more than Romney,” Goode told us, repeating a line that many third party contenders have taken over the years. “There are a lot of life-long Democrats (in the Fifth District) who say they’ll hold their nose and vote for Obama. But as the fellow in the filling station up the road told me, ‘I’m a Democrat, but if you’re on the ballot, Virgil, I’m voting for you.’”
We recalled how much as it was widely interpreted that Obama’s victory by a plurality over John McCain in North Carolina in 2008 was due to votes for Libertarian Bob Barr. We then pointed out to Goode that, regardless of his interpretation, pundits and political analysts would almost certainly interpret a narrow Obama win in Virginia to a strong Goode showing and asked how he would feel then.
“In many ways, for conservatives, it might be better to have Obama as president next year rather than Romney,” replied Goode, explaining that “it would be tougher to get through Congress some bad things under Obama than it would under Romney.”
“Take one for the team? Not me brother!”
Recalling how the president announced earlier this year his order not to pursue deportation of illegal aliens who complete high school or join the military, Goode noted that “Romney wouldn’t come out against the short-term amnesty. He was just going with the wind. If Obama were president, Republicans in Congress would oppose him on things like this on principle and almost unanimously. But if Romney were president, he would probably get it through (Congress).
“Remember how (Republican presidential candidate Rick) Santorum explained his vote for the No Child Left Behind (federal education program under George W. Bush) by saying: ‘Sometimes you’ve got take one for the team.’ That’s the argument Romney would use with Republicans to get them to pass things they normally wouldn’t oppose.”
As a Democrat in Congress in the 1990s, Goode pointed out that he voted a strong right-to-life line despite the fact that the Democratic leadership was in the other camp on the abortion issue. As a Republican from 2002-08, he said, “I was urged to ‘take one for the team’ and vote for CAFTA (a free trade agreement). I didn’t think it was good for the country and I opposed it. Sometimes you have to show some backbone.”
As a Democrat, Goode in the House scored unusually high ratings of 84 percent and 83 pe cent with the American Conservative Union; as an independent and later a Republican, his ratings went higher and his lifetime ACU average in 96 percent.
In carrying the banner of the Constitution Party, Virgil Goode is again not “taking one for the team.” Whether he qualifies for the Virginia ballot Aug. 24 and how well he does in his home state will surely be watched there, as well as by Republicans nationwide.
Romney boasted that he would be better for gay rights than Ted Kennedy.

About the concept of God I learned from a Indian Chief in a greater sense here in the Northwest. It was standing before a circle of rocks on the ground, known as a Medicine Wheel that I learned a great teaching: Each rock represents a doorway. Each doorway leads to the Great Spirit, the Father of all life. Mormonism is a doorway.
It was Christ who said, “You are Petros and upon this rock petra I will build my Church.”(Mat 16:18-20).
The prayer circle is found in many religions throughout the ages. I will say that Christ is the best rock in that circle. My Indian Chief friend agreed as he held a smoldering sage stick.

Romney undid himself more than forty years ago, when he became a flaming liberal.
True. He said he'd be their best friend, and that his being a republican would give him inroads that a democrat wouldn't be permitted.
Recently he has supported gay couples. Then he said those gay couples should be allowed to adopt children.
He didn't denounce Obama's amnesty plan for "any" child of illegals.
He didn't denounce military uniforms in gay pride parades.
He still hasn't denounced Romneycare and its $50 abortions at taxpayer expense.

If that is true (which it is) then Congress should and must impeach him (which they won't because they are all cowards).
I'm willing to bet that only about 1% of the Romneybots on this thread voted for him in the primaries. I'd also bet that most of the rest of you ABO people vowed not to vote for Romney under any circumstances. That was the prevailing position for most freepers before Romney locked up the nomination with votes from liberal independent and democrat crossovers.
Now that Romney is perceived as the last best hope, you've all changed your tune.
Fine vote for Romney. Sacrifice your principles on the altar of expediency. Give him the mandate to be the progressive anti-tea party liberal he has always been and always will be.

I have gone into the archives and discovered you are exactly correct. When I check a particular freeper's preferred candidate it is never romney.
However, when I check negative comments about Romney I get that from about 98% of the ABO's. Interestingly, I find a few that appear to have treated Romney with kid gloves all along...almost as if they were silent supporters.
We have discussed this before. If we can take the senate and hold firm the House of Representatives, Obama will have to survive on EO’s (executive orders) alone, because he will be frozen in place, unable to move anything or get a single thing funded.
With Romney, Republican majorities will pass socialism for the show if nothing else. This has been the opinion of many of us since Romney floated to the top like the corpse he is.
These hysterical tools used by the party who are voting fearfully for Romney will find themselves in shock with a Romney win, more than they can imagine, with all their big talk about holding feet to the fire “after the election”. How desperate. The Republicans have rejected them wholesale but for using them as pack mules to get Romney over the line to be discarded later.
We are in trouble, but it isn’t us who started this, it’s those who have slept, cooperated, complied and cowered.

Good night! You really went off with your multiple postings. Methinks you are very much excited about Romney’s Mormon thing. Believe me, I have read much about Mormonism and it is not the brightest rock (from my earlier post) in the collection.
Just think about the concept of God and how he works. God will use something like Mormonism for his own glory. We cannot put God in a box. He has made man to seek his glory. Man exists for God’s glory. The circle of eternity. This is the key: We cannot determine for God what is in His best interest (which is what men do wrong).

You probably don’t want to hear this, but I’m pretty sure the destruction that Romney does to conservatism and shifting the GOP to the left is even more damaging long term, than the damage Zero can do in the next four years.
I’ll vote for conservatives down the ticket, but won’t support either gun grabbing, global warming, abortion supporting socialist.

The politics of Virginia reflect a state that is beginning to experience a conflict between its increasingly liberal northern region and its traditionally conservative southern region. Although traditionally conservative and historically part of the South, modern Virginia is a politically competitive state for both major national parties.
As federal spending continues to grow, a substantial chunk winds up in Northern Virginia. Virginia will NEVER again vote for a presidential candidate serious about reigning in federal agency and federal government power and growth.

Kimball, the 12th "prophet" of the Lds church (1973-1985), as the man who allowed blacks to become Mormon priests in 1978...a doctrinal change that also impacted how Mormons see "Lamanites" -- Native Americans...as the Book of Mormon taught that Native Americans' skin color would change ... [Mormon racism]
Lds "prophets" like John Taylor (3rd Lds "prophet") and Kimball (12th Lds "prophet") likewise taught the "gods in embryo"???(Kimball was one of its key proponents)
Mormonism teaches this false "gospel" of self-transformation -- of pulling yourself up by the bootstraps to become a god?

To Kimball, you had to "pay the total penalties" for your sin -- vs. that being a role occupied by the true Jesus Christ.
