The dirty secret is that the unions get a big pay increase if the minimum wage increases.

The minimum wage is the worst thing that ever happened to blacks.

The last year in which the black unemployment rate was lower than the white unemployment rate was 1930. That was also the last year in which there was no federal minimum wage law.

The Davis-Bacon Act of 1931 was in part a result of a series of incidents in which non-union black construction labor enabled various contractors from the South to underbid Northern contractors who used white, unionized construction labor.

The Davis-Bacon Act required that “prevailing wages” be paid on government construction projects– “prevailing wages” almost always meaning in practice union wages. Since blacks were kept out of construction unions then, and for decades thereafter, many black construction workers lost their jobs.

A higher minimum wage at this juncture will not only provide raises for low-wage workers but would provide some help on the jobs front as well.

Bwahahahaha...It'll provide help on the jobs front only if they think more unemployed is good for the economy.

Only thing that can help those making minimum wage,
is the desire to get off of it!

Oh yeah, there's nothing like an increase in labor costs to really spur hiring. </sarcasm>

Ecerpt from a Thomas Sowell Column:

In countries around the world, minimum wage laws have a track record of increasing unemployment, especially among the young, the less skilled and minorities. It has done the same in America.

Over the past three years, I went from the equivalents of $70/hr. to $34/hr. to $0/hr.

Who gives a rat's behind about what the minimum wage is or was?

The young should be out in the streets protesting this. This would be a good Tea Party issue.

Why not $100/hour??
According to dems, each $1.00 in handouts yields $1.70 benefit to the economy.
Heck, poverty could be wiped out in a heartbeat.

Minimum wage laws help NO ONE in the long run. By interfering with contract rights and personal freedom, choice is reduced and employment opportunities diminished.

Who suffers most? Those at the low end of the wage scale who are robbed of the self-respect that comes with employment, robbed of the chance to learn the habit of responsibility, and robbed of the chance to build experience and value in the workplace.

Minimum wage laws were NEVER intended to help the working poor; they were intended to price young black Americans out of the labor market, and turn them from citizens into government clients. All to the immediate benefit of the Democrat Plantation Party.

RE :”A higher minimum wage at this juncture will not only provide raises for low-wage workers but would provide some help on the jobs front as well. ......
They also note that recent studies on the effect of increases in the minimum wage on employment show: increases in the minimum wage have had little or no negative effect on the employment of minimum wage workers, even during times of weakness in the labor market

Federal minimum wage went up in early 2009. Anyone remember what happened to ‘low wage workers’ then?

The Republican House should send the Senate a bill that raises the minimum wage by $5.00 per hour (or maybe $10) effective next week and expiring the day after the election. What would Dems do with that?

I have little doubt a minimum wage boost would help a lot of workers. Of course, it would also hurt a lot of workers by throwing them out of jobs, and hurt a lot of folks who aren’t yet workers by pricing them out of their part-time summer or after-school job. Of course the 60 million plus kids who lose a chance at work experience don’t vote and neither they nor the minimum wage workers who’d lose their jobs pay union dues.

Minimum wage increases just seem like a clever way the government uses to increase tax revenue. Who benefits?
