(CBS News) CBS News has learned that the NCAA will announce what a high-ranking association source called "unprecedented" penalties against both the Penn State University football team and the school.
"I've never seen anything like it," the source told correspondent Armen Keteyian.
NCAA President Mark Emmert will make the announcement Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the organization's headquarters in Indianapolis.
The penalties come in the wake of the independent report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that chronicled repeated efforts by four top Penn State officials, including former football coach Joe Paterno, to conceal allegations of serial child sex abuse by Jerry Sandusky over a 14-year period.

How many state universities does Pennsylvania have? Where else would they go?
If they are as severe as suggested here, and no reason to think there’s any hyperbole here, this will end their membership in the Big Ten as well. As SMU has shown, you can’t ever really come back from a “death” penalty.
Who would ever work for such a program? I feel just a bit for the students...but Penn State is not going to be a school worth going to for a very long time...that’s what transfers are for.
Just exactly are we trying to punish here? The gay pedifile, the people that failed or the young men playing and trying to get an education?
Punish the guilty but don’t punish those not even there at the time.
Really it’s a puzzle why Penn State did not dump this guy and turn him over to the police when they found out. Sandusky must know something more than grabbing footballs.
Why were they afraid of exposing Sandusky? Were they protecting more than the football program?

I donno how about other states? Penn State did this to themselves after all.
At a minimum the football program should be completely dismantled. This activity should be a fatal blow to any program. My personal opinion is the crime itself is one matter committed by a psycho sicko but the institutional wink, nod and coverup is unforgivable.
Kentucky basketball did.

Students can transfer schools and their scholaships with them.
This went to the top at Penn State, as far as the president’s office.
That school needs to be destroyed brick by brick.
SMU is at least respectable now, with June Jones coaching there.
IMHO, the death penalty was the best thing that ever happened to SMU for their academics.
Penn State’s days were over regardless, the balance of power in college football is firmly in the south......top players don’t want to play up north in the cold, when they can play in warmer places in the SEC and Big 12. Note that in recent years, the Big 12 has shed most of its’ more Northern schools.
It is a lesson to be learned by all that the “unintended consequences” of those hurt by others is real and is just part of the penalty portion of those consequences.
Our society has been so desensitized and tolerant of abhorrent behavior that if there are no innocents affected, except those who were raped by Sandusky, there would not be a lesson learned to translate that pressure to other places in our society that have the same problems staring them in the face and doing nothing about it.
Accountability only begins with those negatively affected being able to tell all just how much of a burden they have been saddled with because of others inaction and ambivalence.
Idol worship is at the heart of this whole sorted story. The book of Genesis covers the consequences of this quite clearly.

Other public state universities include University of Pittsburgh,Temple and Lincoln University. Also their is the PASSHE system of state universities which are 14 in number and include Slippery Rock, Clarion, Mansfield Universities etc.
