Near Riot Breaks Out After Officer-Involved Shooting In Anaheim
CBS) ^ | July 21, 2012 9:53 PM | Jay Jackson

A suspect was wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Anaheim Saturday and a protest about that shooting later turned into a near riot.

The shooting took place in the 600 block of N. Anna Drive just after 4 p.m.

Residents, protesting what they say is an increased police violence against them in the community, started the near riot on nearby La Palma.

Jay Jackson, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, said the scene was chaotic. More than six hours later, he said residents were still out in the streets protesting the shooting.

The residents blocked off a street and set fire to at least one dumpster.

Earlier in the day, police in riot gear, fired rubber bullets into the crowd. Several protesters lifted their shirts to show large red welts on their torsos and backs. Residents told Jackson that police overreacted and created the disturbance.

One man said, “They just started shooting.”

Police also set a K-9 officer on one woman and a bystander they said were agitating the situation.

Said Susan Lopez, “I had my baby with me. My baby! The dog scratched me and then grabbed me.” She added, “They shot at me while I was holding a baby!” Another woman yelled, “They just shot at us, they shot at a little kid, too.”

According to police, two patrol officers observed three male suspects in an alley.

Police said the suspects tried to flee on foot when a chase ensued.

The shooting reportedly occurred after one of the officers encountered one of the suspects in a courtyard.

The shooting took place in the 700 block of N. Anna.

The suspect, condition unknown, was taken to UCI Medical Center. Neighbors identified the man as “Stomper.”

No officers were injured.

The other two suspects are at-large.

Anaheim Police Sgt. Bob Dunn said, “What exactly led to the shooting, we don’t know. We’re still investigating. But a shooting did occur. And the male was taken to a hospital.”

Authorities said the circumstances regarding the shooting were under investigation by members of the gangs unit and Orange County District Attorney’s office.

Four people told Jackson that police offered to buy their cell phone video.

Tale of two cities, Decatur and Newport Beach?

Lets see, Decatur is a very close-in suburb to Altanta, literally within a couple of miles from downtown...You could walk into downtown Atlanta from there.

Lets look at the crime stats for these two regions, shall we?

You might enjoy this!

Atlanta and Newport Beach Comparative Crime Ratios per 100,000 People

Lumping Decatur in with Atlanta is like using DC stats for Chevy Chase, MD. What’s your point?

LOL, Decatur is literally part of Atlanta, within walking distance to downtown.

Come on.

My point is, and the stats clearly indicate, there is a hell of a lot more crime in that area, than Newport Beach.

This isn't even debatable.

That’s ridiculous. And what does it have to do with those commercials?

Ridiculous until ya see the stats.

The commercials are government sponsored, in NB, with little crime, they try to make it look really exciting and dangerous...Ya getting the picture?

LOL!

Dishonest how? Ya think government law enforcement recruitment videos don't embellish and gin up their productions?

Too funny!

. the grass is mowed. plants are planted. streets are shaded.

Yeah, I walked real close to that block during a convention with a bunch of off-time. The neighborhoods seemed fine, nothing that I could complain about at all (except the real estate prices).

You deliberately misused stats. If Decatur is indeed an enclave in Atlanta, it's crime rate is as relevant to the rest of Atlanta as Foxhall Rd or Cleveland Park's crime rate is to crime ridden DC neighborhoods like Anacostia or 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!

(Capitol Hill would have also worked in my little joke)

The point of those ads was to show how un-American that Newport Beach video was. You SUPPORT that stuff????

You can't be this stupid.

The ads/links you provided were law enforcement RECRUITMENT videos. Newport Beach is relatively crime free compared to any part of the Atlanta region. Why do ya think they doctored it up, to make it look dangerous and exciting?

Hello?

Newport Beach unAmerican? BTW slick, NB is probably one of the most Republican, conservative areas of the state.

It's time to put some cones around your comments.

interesting the way the cops turned the k-9 loose on the women and children first ~ did any one pick up on whether or not these were real cops or renta cops, or was this a bunch of gangbangers pretending to be cops?

Yo, those accents suggest English is not only the first language there, it's the only one. You run into that a lot in CA ~ really old hispanic neighborhoods ~

Watching the video it turns out the girl's uncle was unarmed ~ and it seems the cops shot him for running?

Then there’s Manhattan Beach ~ even with property values down the way they are now about 99.999999% of Americans can’t really afford to live there ~ miles to real grocery stores ~ wears out Mercedes something fierce i’ve been told.

A friend of mine lives there, and dang, last time I visited her, I had the same thought...Tijuana! My friend and her son have nicknamed their town “Ana-Crime.” Their cars have been repeatedly broken into or stolen, and the loud Mexican music keeps them up at night. It’s gotten as bad as LA. Makes me sick, what has happened to this once wonderful area.

My children used to go to school right next to Anna Drive. It’s a very rough neighborhood and the poverty is terrible.

There are two churches within a block of it; they should be doing more to lift Anna Drive up.
