Bill Dedman, an investigative reporter for msnbc.com, is reporting that the suspect in the horrifying shooting in Aurora, Colorado was a camp counselor in the summer of 2008 for underprivileged children in Glendale, California.
NBC News has more information:
Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles confirmed that [James] Holmes was a cabin counselor, responsible for 10 children at its Camp Max Straus for children ages 7 to 14 from Los Angeles. Holmes was then a 20-year-old student at the University of California, Riverside, and neighbors have said he was active in the Presbyterian church that the family attended. The camp is nonsectarian.
A statement from the group said, His role was to [ensure] that these children had a wonderful camp experience by helping them learn confidence, self esteem and how to work in small teams to effect positive outcomes. These skills are learned through activities such as archery, horseback riding, swimming, art, sports and high ropes course.
A fellow counselor told NBC News that Holmes seemed shy.
The entire staff was really close, considering we lived together, except for James, said the counselor, who asked that she not be named. He really kept to himself and hardly ever went on any trips with the rest of the staff. He was very shy and reserved.

Most of all, we need to ban quietness. They are ALWAYS quiet.
That’s exactly what I was getting at. It’s been a long day for me. My annual old tractor show was today and I’m kinda tahred. Thanks.
They should ban Glendale.
They can take him in for 72 hours for determination by a counselor. That is why the sheriff in the Giffords shooting was culpable. They knew that dude was unhinged and did nothing to stop it.
I’m guessing the kid was a genius who crossed the line into madness. It’s not unheard of. Pythagoras, Nietzche, Tesla, Howard Hughes, etc.
I interpret that as though you meant we hold 4th Amendment Rights too dear to prevent these types of occurrences from happening....the 4th being an impediment rather than a blessing.
I figured as much.
Hope you get a good nights rest!
This is all so true. I do not know how he could have been detected or forced into treatment because as you say there are problems with funding, and how could his mother tell him what to do, I am sure he would not have listened anyway.
Yes, I do recall Hinkley and he definitely was proud of all the attention he got.
It seems also there was no way to prevent this. Who could have predicted this exact scenario, and we can’t have scanners and metal detectors at every movie theater. Really tragic and I do hope there will not be copycats (as was the case with Colombine).
Oh and BTW..the last meeting my wife attended, they determined that there are an estimated 3 million of these out on the streets.
We all can expect more of this, especially since they are not working and have all that time to ponder in their minds...if you know what I mean.
A lot of these people are actually at the genius level.
Anyway, when I read some of my traits in that book, I freaked out. "Oh no.....me?"
I had a friend on base who was a counselor, so I asked him about that. He kinda laughed at me, and said pretty much everybody's got traits that could be construed as "nut job", if you try hard enough.
Whew. That was a relief.
And I bet he never thought there was anything wrong with him. (or did he?) But that’s often the case. Almost always.
Oh yes there are copycats. With that many out on the streets, something like this will really set them off. One thing about these wackos..they are the ultimate ME, ME, ME, too bunch.
This is the ONLY and thee ONLY case where I would support complete block grants from the feds to the states to fund mental illness organizations. I’d prefer counties, but the states already have the bins to herd them into if they go off.
I was in the same squadron as Lee Harvey oswald I was told!
that or the same MOS...
Lol, we all probably have some traits that show up in those profiles. I think they're pretty much worthless. It's cases where someone is observed in some behavior, or specific action that suggests criminal intent that can be useful. Several kids have been nabbed while plotting a school shooting.
I wonder if anyone observed Holmes moving all that ammunition into his apartment, or all that other stuff he accumulated over a fairly short period of time.
Yes, me too . it really is a necessity at this point or more of the same will follow.
“I wonder if anyone observed Holmes moving all that ammunition into his apartment, or all that other stuff he accumulated over a fairly short period of time. “
This is not illegal, though. So why would observing it make a difference?
We’d all like to predict when a crime’s going to occur. It’s only good human nature to try to see a type, a pattern, a tipoff. . .
but the fact is, we can’t. That is what “crazy” means. It doesn’t make sense, and we don’t know who is going to do what, when
Hey - Not funny!
It’s crucial to keep in mind that there are untold millions of camp counselors and university assistant football coaches who are neither mass killers nor pedophiles!
There might have been an underlying remorse that caused it, I don't know. But, after he was caught, he acknowledged that he knew he was a bad person. But there was something really haywire inside him, that he knew, but couldn't stop. Maybe like a drug addict that can't stop, even though said addict knows it's killing him.
Early on I heard news reports that his mother called from San Diago and said you have the right person. Obviously she knew something was wrong with him.
