Fire officials said 21 people at an event hosted by motivational speaker Tony Robbins suffered burns while walking across hot coals, and three of the injured were treated at hospitals.
The injuries took place during the first day Thursday of a four-day event at the San Jose Convention Center hosted by Robbins called "Unleash the Power Within." Most of those hurt had second and third degree burns, said San Jose Fire Department Capt. Reggie Williams.
Walking across hot coals heated to between 1,200 to 2,000 degrees provides attendees an opportunity to "understand that there is absolutely nothing you can overcome," according to the motivational speaker's website.

Is there a chance to vote against Obama on the far side?

"...now they have the opportunity to lean how to change bandages"
I'll do that without the hot coals thank you.
Little gods. Anything but Jesus who
got our torture out of the way.
In the dark age of Ubama the Usurper, hope doesn’t seem to change the laws of physics like it used to nor is blind faith in words what it was just a few years ago.

Did someone say, “After you, Tony?” Next, they should try that snake handling religious sect. That usually turns out to be exciting.
Some people are too stupid to live.
But I don't want to talk about Obama supporters right now.
That's actually pretty demotivational if you stop and think about what he said.
Ok, one person burned I can see. Maybe two. But 21? Is this a cult? Unleash the lemmings within?
Let's see if Roberts "overcomes" the lawsuits coming his way from them.
“there is NOTHING you CAN OVERCOME” Means you are utterly powerless. Whose Freudian slip was that, the event promoters or the writer of the article?
I’ve done fire walking in the past.... on two separate occasions about a year apart.
VERY interesting experience!
Not for the faint of heart, but with a good facilitator and the proper conditions not too hard either.
Sounds like these people were too ‘rah’ ‘rah’ and not enough time for the coals to burn down! (I think the layer of ash on the outside of the coals makes a big difference... plus being moving BEFORE you step on the coals)
Either ABCNEWS changed the article after the OP excerpted from the article and posted here, or OP altered the article excerpt, substituting "can" for "can't".
BTW, the Robbins website currently sez..."The Firewalk Experience. On Day 1, you will learn how to annihilate your fears. You'll have the opportunity to walk across a bed of hot coals between 1,200 and 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and in doing so, you'll understand that there is absolutely nothing you cannot overcome." (bold is mine)
Next time give them cyanide tablets and tell them they can overcome. What a moron.
On October 8, 2009, at a New Age "Spiritual Warrior" retreat conceived and hosted by Ray at the Angel Valley Retreat Center in Yavapai County near Sedona, Arizona, two participants, James Shore and Kirby Brown, died as a result of being in a sweat lodge exercise. Eighteen others were hospitalized after suffering burns, dehydration, breathing problems, kidney failure, or elevated body temperature. Liz Neuman, another attendee, died October 17 after being comatose for a week.[19]
The attendees, who had paid up to $10,000 to participate in the retreat, had fasted for 36 hours during a vision quest exercise before the next day's sweat lodge. During this vision quest, participants were left alone in the Arizona desert with a sleeping bag, although Ray offered them Peruvian ponchos for an additional $250.[20] After this experience, participants ate a large buffet breakfast before entering the sweat lodge.[21] A site owner reported she learned after the event that participants went two days without water before entering the lodge.[22]
I think some people follow these self help gurus with a religious like devotion because they want to put their faith in someone or something. The best place to put it is in God.
Note to folks, there is a lot of difference between
1200 degrees and 2000.
1200 and steel is pink to cherry red.
2000 and it’s bright yellow and plastic.
You wouldn’t want to come into contact with either one
but I sure as heck prefer cherry to yellow/white,
and I’ve come into contact with both.
