Drugs.
Something was way off long before he bought any guns. He believed one lie, upon another lie, upon another until he devises a plan and that’s when guns come in.
Not like a home owner who buys to protect him/family from harm but he buys to cause harm.

He dropped out of school about that time.
I think he was probably a typical late-adolescent onset schizophrenic, but that said, I think he may have had OWS or Islamic connections that pushed him into real violence. Paranoid schizophrenics often see themselves as warriors for a cause, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see some outside influences in his life that gave him some way of justifying his insanity.
There is a possibility of adult on set schizophrenia. This would explain the music fixation,not sleeping & other signs, like dropping out of coll. with no explanation.
Good question, but it sure looks like the Batman trailer portraying the very crime he committed had something to do with his actions. Maybe it is time for the guys in the movie studio to start thinking about the effect of the movies they make.
