Greek island wants to join Austria

Posted By Joshua KeatingWednesday, July 18, 2012 - 12:11 PM Share

German MPs provoked outrage in Greece in 2010 with a somewhat tongue-in-cheek suggestion that the coutnry shoudl consider selling off some of its islands to settle its accounts. But it appears that some residents of the island of Ikaria is looking to leave the country unilaterally:

The last time there was an “Anschluss” involving Austria, it didn’t work out so well.

I’m looking to “leave” California, have the SanFernando Valley merge with Texas if that works.

Ikaria is one of those places in Europe where it is very common for people live to be over 100 years old.

Perhaps the spry young 80-somethings would prefer to live the next 25 years as citizens of a functional country, rather than continue in poverty in The Big Fat Greek Fiasco.

It’s the ultimate Chapter 7: breakup the country. All neighboring countries can take a piece.

And no bids for Zakynthos...the island of the blind.

EVEN by the extravagant standards of Greek corruption, the scam uncovered by Stelios Bozikis is so brazen it is hard to credit.

Nearly 600 people on the Ionian island of Zakynthos - where Mr Bozikis was recently elected mayor - had themselves falsely declared blind to obtain state benefits.

They included taxi drivers, shopkeepers and restaurant owners. ''Out of 650 registered blind people on the island, we estimate that at least 600 are fraudulent claims,'' the mayor said. That represents nearly 2 per cent of the island's population of 35,000 - nearly 10 times the average rate of blindness in Europe.

The claimants were receiving monthly payments of at least €350 ($A442). Those who supposedly needed carers received more. Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/world/greeces-island-of-the-blind-revealed-20120429-1xsxj.html#ixzz218E7ULPg

How very weird to find the extremely obscure and unattractive island of Ikaria mentioned twice in the same week on FR. Of course people on the island want to get off, it’s awful. Fifty years ago, most of the young men went to work in the Pittsburgh steel mills.

Umm...yes, the ones who are left behind live long. There has been huge emigrantion from that island to the US and elsewhere, so I’d question the quality of life there.
