I'm certain he has known about it...but it carries so much more credibility if it is reported independently, if Romney isn't the one reporting it. If it was Romney pointing it out Obama can pivot and have it re-interpreted as political give-and-take, he said, she said. If it comes out independently, then it shows that Obama's campaign are just plain old liars and hypocrites and it can't be used to counter-attack Romney as a negative campaigner and muck-raker.
Once it is out in the open from an independent source then it completely neutralizes the current main line of attack from the other side

Well, it was a picture of a beaver, a very large unattractive one. I think the site you posted from was taunting you for bandwith abuse and substituted a different image in place of the one you intended. No harm done...
