Freedom not to associate is an important American right
In the Boy Scout oath, a young man promises to keep himself morally straight. Despite pressure from homosexual activists, that pledge will continue to mean something.
On Tuesday, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) announced that they would retain their policy excluding homosexuals from membership and leadership positions. The announcement followed a two-year review by a select committee, which came to the unanimous conclusion that it was absolutely the best policy for the Boy Scouts.
The rule had come under fire from homosexual groups recently after Jennifer Tyrrell was forced out of the leadership of her sons Tiger Scout den because she is a lesbian. Also, last weekend, Eric Jones, a 19-year-old Eagle Scout, was fired from being a counselor at a Boy Scout camp in Missouri after revealing his homosexual preference.
Homosexual activists claim this is discrimination, but the dispute is actually over the freedom to associate. This was made plain in the 2000 Supreme Court case, Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, which directly addressed the scouts policy. The high court held that a New Jersey public-accommodations law did not require BSA to reinstate a homosexual assistant scoutmaster since that application of the law conflicted with the First Amendment right of freedom of association.

The Scout Oath or Promise
On my honor I will do my best:
To do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep my self physically strong, mentally awake,
and morally straight.
Agreed. We had ladies for den leaders in Cub Scouts back then but the Boy Scouts had all men for leaders in the 50’s and later in the 70’s when our son was in, that’s how it should be now.
Completely agree, FRiend.
Very well said, FRiend. The homosexuals, pedophiles and NAMBLA types should not be allowed anywhere near Scouts and all three groups are practically indistinguishable.
Are you kidding? They were long gone before this. They are the enemy - along with anyone who doesn't depend on government.
I remember how stunned I was when Al Gore in 2000 railed against the BSA in campaign speeches. I thought at the time how far had the Democratic party gone off the deep end; it was like campaigning against motherhood & apple pie.
Nowadays attacks on the BSA are commonplace.
God bless the BSA for not caving - for now.
For me, by the way....latter 50's:
Troop 93, Somerdale, NJ and
Troop 338, Cocoa Beach, FL
The Scouts taught me to swim at a camp on a Cypress lake, with water the color of tea...where you couldn't see the snapping turtles coming! Ah, fond memories!
It's a whole lotta hype and hooey. Why these silly folks want to be involved is beyond me.
The top people at Penn State are sick about this...
Not all women are feminazis. If it weren’t for the strong support we have in our troop from the mothers of our Scouts, we would not have a troop at all.
BOB MAZZUCA for President !!! Finally someone who stands up for decency as opposed to politically correct deviancy!
As a scoutmaster, I have to assume you have not met many scouts. The young men that come out of the program are some of the finest examples of how you would want your 18 year old son to behave.
political correctness lost. this round.
The nature of the interaction of men and boys in the scouts demands it be straight sexually. Homos raped the heck out of boys in the 70’s and 80’s with a nationwide ring.
Well, just for the record, Mitt Romney kicked the BSA out of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics right after James Dale was handed down, and homosexual NGO's began their strong, long campaign of vendetta against the BSA, trying to drive them completely out of public life and cut off all their contributors.
United Way promptly, under homosexual influence, cut off the BSA and has kept them on the official hate list ever since. The City of San Diego kicked the BSA out of a city park that the BSA had built with their own labor and given to the City two generations before, after demands were made on the SD city council by the gay NGO's.
Homosexuals make sore losers look like exemplars of grace and winsomeness, by comparison. Their vendetta continues today.
Boys need strong male role models....not female roll models. Quite frankly, your logic stinks and misses the point of the necessity for male leadership and mentoring. If you can’t find upright, dedicated men to run the show, then the BSA shouldn’t sanction a troop there. Period! By the way, are there no real men where you live? How sad.
There can be a case made for women leaders. They progress from den leaders to Boy Scouts.
In our troop we have two ladies that are part of the leadership. They are both valuable to the troop in records keeping and in event transportation planning. One has completed Woodbadge. They both participate in the outdoor program.
We have about 70 scouts and 80 registered leaders.
Last evening I chaired an Eagle Rank presentation ceremony to a scout who returned from Singapore for the ceremony. His family had to move there before the scheduled court of honor. It was a very important ceremony in the life of our troop in that I had presented the Eagle Award to his dad a few years back. It was the first instance of both father and son from the troop receiving the Eagle award.
