The woman who stood up to Joe Paterno
CNN ^ | July 15th, 2012 | Ann O'Neill

(CNN) -- Vicky Triponey knows all too well the power Penn State's late football coach, Joe Paterno, held for more than half a century over the insular slice of central Pennsylvania that calls itself Happy Valley.

She experienced firsthand the clubby, jock-snapping culture, the sense of entitlement, the cloistered existence. It's what drove her five years ago from her job as the vice president who oversaw student discipline. She was told she was too aggressive, too confrontational, that she wasn't fitting in with "the Penn State way."

She clashed often with Paterno over who should discipline football players when they got into trouble. The conflict with such an iconic figure made her very unpopular around campus. For a while, it cost Triponey her peace of mind and her good name. It almost ended her 30-year academic career.

Another person might have felt vindicated, smug or self-righteous when former FBI Director Louis Freeh delivered the scathing report on his eight-month investigation of the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal.

The inquiry, commissioned by the board of trustees, exposed how the personal failings of Paterno and three other Penn State leaders -- along with the university's football-first culture -- empowered an assistant football coach who molested fatherless boys for more than a decade.

"There's no joy," Triponey told CNN as she sat down for an interview Friday, the day after the Freeh report was released. She said she found solace in the public recognition of Penn State's "culture of reverence for the football program," as the report phrased it, and that it is "ingrained at all levels of the campus community." Freeh found that the culture contributed to the Sandusky scandal.

I’ve never been close to anyone who did anything like what this Sandusky did so I really don’t think I can even imagine how screwed up the thinking must be. When he was convicted, I wrote a post here that suggested that he be left in a cell with a pistol and a Bible, and that no one bring him any food, water or supplies. Just return in a couple of weeks and remove his body.

I assume these guys can on some level control themselves, but they often don’t, obviously.

Penn State. Yeah, well, wait until the lawyers get done with them. I guess that means the state’s taxpayers are going to get hit pretty hard. How many separate jury trials? It’s not good.

If there aren’t already, Grand Juries should be empaneled to indict every single Penn State big wig who even suspected this was going on. The the victims need to be granted Class Action status to sue Penn State until there’s nothing left of it but a smoking hole in the Earth.

Then they can go after the State of Pennaylvania.

Football is to Penn State what islam is to Mecca. It is a violent, sodomizing cult

Here Here!! EXACTLY!!!

Football is a malignant tumor that is destroying us. Making icons of 340 pound IQ 10’s is NOT what education should do.

The Chinese and Russians are going to take over totally...while we watch f’ball.

"I assume these guys can on some level control themselves, but they often don’t, obviously."

Sandusky didn't have to control himself. He had the green light from Paterno and others.

I worked in uniform for 25 years in the NY State prison system, and dealt with all kinds of criminals. I'd like to think that Sandusky will have a hard time behind bars, but the truth is, the scumbag will probably ask for protective custody and get it. He was protected at Penn State, and will be protected behind bars.

His last couple of months on earth must have been pretty miserable with the cancer and all this craziness surrounding him.

I hope Paterno's last couple of months on earth were a living Hell, brought on by the knowledge that his legacy would forever be tarnished by what he allowed to happen. If this stress abetted the advance of his death, I'd call that advancing his appointment with the Judgement Seat of Christ. Hopefully for the sake of his immortal soul he make good his last days on earth and prepared himself for that ultimate meeting.

There is great update out there now by a former SI reporter who once was part of the KoolAid Drinking Football Worshipping Testosterone Fueled Macho crew. In it, at the end of JoPed’s pathetic life, the reporter points out that JoPed could have made a gesture by confessing his role and expressing his regrets.

That JoPed DID NOT DO SO pretty much casts in concrete his despicable and specious participation in the pedophile environment that existed at Penn State for so long.

What REALLY concerns me is that the entire Football Industry from High School through College through Broadcasting and the rest of the Sports Media industry is playing this tragedy like Penn State is an isolated incident when we all know in our hearts that it’s just the tip of the iceberg, just like the first catholic church to crash and burn in public was the tip of THAT iceberg.

So sad that this country is devolving so rapidly into the hands of the perverts. I saw some “serious” discussions already about the foot in the door gay marriage acceptance leading in all earnestness to bigamy next.

And the lunatics in Sacramento have now taken the position that a child can have more than one “legal” parent (including so called “anonymous” sperm donors). And watch what ridiculous unintended consequences THAT will generate!

Even the old adage “I’ll believe that when I see pigs fly” no longer has any validity because the FAA has ruled that pot bellied pigs can indeed fly in the cabin of a commercial airliner if the passenger needs the company of their “companion animal” to “feel good”. (Snakes On A Plane anyone?????)

I know that this seems easy to say, but I am pretty certain that I would prefer a very early death to what he is facing. There must be plenty of ways to end one’s life in there. How could someone go on?

The best suggestion yet! Now find a way to provide a Similar fate for the rest of those in the PSU administration who were involved.

What’s going to happen when a Muslim wants to board the plane? You’ll have one branch of liberal loonies fighting the other branch. Should be interesting! Bring popcorn.

But...I assure you that WE will be paying the legal bills for the entire mess when it happens.

"How could someone go on?"

You're assuming these people have a conscience. They don't. Sandusky still refuses to admit what he did. He probably never will.

Well, you must be right because otherwise, how could they do it in the first place, over and over and over again?

Is it possible that this is perhaps one reason why Paterno stayed around so long because he knew as soon as he left this would all become public.

Yup, and with Sandusky on suicide watch it's going to be next to impossible for him to do the only honorable thing left.
