I experienced this attachment recently when our libinlaw was at our house and was VERY ANGRY that we had “prepper items” in our house.
She just kept repeating how “insane” it was, but I read right through it - our preps were pointing out the imminent failure of her worldview.
The fact that you were seen to be prepping also amounted to a threat. Fundamentally mentally disturbed individuals respond with denial and insults - and that’s exactly what you got.
