Its completely understandable that many people would explain being trans in this way: as an inborn characteristic, not a matter of choice, and a cause of perpetual suffering that can only be alleviated by transitioning. For plenty of us, this really is the case, and the claim that we had no choice in this is a strong rebuttal to the people who believe were only trans so that we can rape people in restrooms, confuse everyones children and destroy the fabric of society. Its a way of making it clear that this is a real condition, in a world that largely refuses to recognize it. But this general model of what its like to be trans isnt entirely reflective of what every trans person experiences. These various elements arent always present in trans peoples lives in the same combination and to the same degree. Its not always a burning red arrow of constant agony pointing you directly to another gender. I spent a long time doubting that I could really be trans, because for me, it wasnt like this at all. And Ive had a lot of choices about it, too.

I was at a prayer/ healing conference where a woman — born woman, changed to man (surgically), changed back to woman (”because it finally dawned on me that God made me a woman’) spoke. It was heart-wrenching. She was finally so very solid, so very sure that she was female.
What twisted reasoning she had bought to have mutliated her body so.

It is a mental illness. I believe it comes from the person really, really wishing they were someone else. And the only way to become someone else (in their delusion) is to mutilate themselves to look like someone of the other gender.
The problem is, they’re still the same person—but now in a mutilated body.
Mutilating your genitals doesn’t make a man a woman or vice versa.
It makes you a sad, mentally ill human with mutilated genitals.
When the 3 candidates before the REP primary for dws’s opponent had a debate (09), I think one of them was a trans.
Can XYZ = a very wrong trans_whatever?
I saw one of those on Saturday outside of DnD in Newton Ctr smokin a butt. It was just all wrong...
You can’t tell which way the train went by looking at the tracks.
This is a mental illness. Do we indulge them in their fantasy or work to help them cure themselves?
That’s the only question America must answer.
