The embattled members of Penn State's Board of Trustees quietly have decided to leave Joe Paterno's statue standing -- at least for now and, some hope, forever, according to sources with firsthand knowledge of the trustees' private discussions this week.
The trustees' reluctance to remove the statue is motivated, in part, by a desire not to offend alumni and students who adore the late coach despite the damning findings of his role in the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse cover-up detailed in the Freeh report, the sources said. Some trustees also said in interviews they want to resist being pressured by the media into a sudden decision about such an emotionally charged issue.

Wasn’t Janet Reno involved in that horrible miscarriage of justice?
“....a desire not to offend alumni and students who adore the late coach despite the damning findings....”
.
That says it all.
I can’t believe I am on a Conservative forum. What does football have to do with what happened. A man committed a crime and others covered it up. it could have been in hundreds of other settings. Punish the criminals.. But leave the football program alone. I just can’t believemI am on FreeRepiblic anymore.
“I cant believe I am on a Conservative forum. “
Yep, you have identified a modern American conundrum. Lots of “conservatives” are conservative until their issue of choice comes up. Then they demand more and more and more government.
Despite the fact that the DA declined to prosecute Sandusky, somehow PSU is responsible for what Sandusky did after that date, even when he was not an employee of PSU. I guess these people are demanding a publish shaming of someone who had not yet been convicted or even charged with anything.
There is plenty of irony here like writers who work for a organization like ESPN that held evidence against Bernie Fine until after the statute of limitations ran out demanding that PSU close down football for some time. How about ESPN closing down for double what ever length PSU shuts down football. Sandusky was in fact prosecuted. The case against Fine was never tested in court in part because ESPN held evidence.
I hope the NCAA can deal them the death penalty. No more sports there would be suitable punishment.
If I had my way Pedo State would be bulldozed to the ground and then nuked from orbit just to be sure.
This Board of Trustees can be counted on to do the wrong thing 100% of the time.
sheeeesh!!
and how does one terminate a board member?
They seem to be boldly flipping everyone the bird - it appears they think they are invincible.
Those durn crack smokin’ single moms should have been doing something good for their kids!
Like encouraging an interest in sports!
And allowing them to benefit from a local charity!
oh wait.....
Do they have guards keeping the statue safe? Too bad the boy children weren’t kept safe from Jerry. When a football program is more important than 5, 10, 15 boys, then that football program and it’s fans need some timeout.
brilliant
..as usual
In other news today (no joke), the Poles unveiled a statue of Ronald Reagan with Pope John Paul II, while we continue to celebrate a pederast enabler. OH, OK, sorry, a thugball coach!
The football program, under the direction of Paterno, allowed the rapes to continue, prevented the authorities from getting involved and only because they didn’t want their football team from getting bad publicity.

bump
Yes. But the problem, of course, is that Penn State has never been anything other than just a football program with what amounts to a souped-up community college attached to it. You get rid of football at Penn State and there's no real reason to keep the "university" at all.
Ironically, that's what the "Joe Pa" cultists understand better than anyone, even if they wouldn't put it quite that way.
These crimes are so despicable & went on for so long with top level approval. How could the NCAA NOT hit them with a death penalty?...
...hopefully you aren’t holding your breath for that...PSU football will open on schedule and continue forthwith without interruption...no death penalty, no bowl bans, no recruiting restrictions, no nothing...business as usual...and 100,000 fans chanting that insipid ‘we are...Penn St’ 50 times each game...which we can all watch as they will be on television every single week...the poster on this thread who is so worried about the financial impact of the death penalty can rest assured...not one dime will be lost at Happy Valley, in fact the coffers will be bulging...
...bank on it...
