Paterno Won Sweeter Deal Even as Scandal Played Out

In January 2011, Joe Paterno learned prosecutors were investigating his longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky for sexually assaulting young boys. Soon, Mr. Paterno had testified before a grand jury, and the rough outlines of what would become a giant scandal had been published in a local newspaper.

That same month, Mr. Paterno, the football coach at Penn State, began negotiating with his superiors to amend his contract, with the timing something of a surprise because the contract was not set to expire until the end of 2012, according to university documents and people with knowledge of the discussions. By August, Mr. Paterno and the university’s president, both of whom were by then embroiled in the Sandusky investigation, had reached an agreement.

Joe Paterno SHOULD have done more. He didn’t. He isn’t the monster in this story. He is THE person who could have stopped the monster. He didn’t. EVERYONE and ANYONE who knew about the fiend Sandusky and did nothing to stop him is responsible.

The take away quote from the trial from the lead prosecutor was the question: “How many naked boys does a man have to shower with before someone starts asking a few questions?”. The jury surely decided his guilt at that very moment.

U of Indiana studies pedophilia?

My problem with Penn State is that they knew and covered for a monster for about a decade to protect a coach’s legacy and their own prestige. Such institutes should not be accepted, and rejected when found out. Therefore it punishes those who want to continue with associating with criminal organizations (yes Penn State acted criminally). Sadly its students will pay the price for their criminal decisions to protect the legacy of their football program. This is nothing new, innocent people always suffer the consequences of the boneheaded decision of the leadership of the organizations they are involved with.
Also it sends a warning to any organization or school to think twice about protecting legacies. Ultimately, this would protect defenseless children.

It wasn't 'hearsay', McQueery witnessed the fact that Sandusky was in the shower with a young boy, and heard the attack going on.

'Hearsay' is getting something second hand.

Paterno was hearing this from someone who had first hand knowledge. So, Paterno hears that a grown man is in the shower with a young boy and does what? NOTHING!

Oh, he reported it to the higher ups and then forgot about the entire matter.

Now letters and Emails have come out proving that Paterno knew about what Sandusky was doing earlier and covered it up.

You Paterno defenders are worse then the Clinton defenders ever were!

Paterno was a liar and a fraud and morally complicit in the crimes against those young boys.

He and all those who covered up for Sandusky are morally complicit in the crimes against those young boys.

They are ALL monsters.

My son, age 25, is still upset about what “happened to Paterno”.

Get a broomstick handle, hold it towards him, and tell him to pull down his pants and bend over.

When he looks at you in disbelief, repeat your command, angrily, and walk towards him.

When he starts to freak out, stop, and ask him "What do you think this is about, a joke? How would you like to be one of those kids, and Joe Paterno knew?"

Then smack him on the head with the broomstick handle.

He was upset about the “Paterno legacy” at first before the truth came out. he’s a good kid.

All of the ‘born this way’ ideology came from Alfred Kinsey, who’s research largely relied on journals from admitted, yet anonymous, pedophiles.

His institute and papers all remain at IU.

If that is the standard, how does an institution like the Catholic Church continue? How many monsters occupy the Church by your standard of moral complicity? Who at Penn State besides Sandusky was raping children? I think it diminishes the truly evil by lumping everyone together. Is the janitor at Penn State who witnessed one of the incidents, but was afraid that he might be fired if he , a monster? He lived in fear of what would happen to him if he dared pursue the matter with the authorities. Nonetheless, his inaction likely allowed more children to be victimized. Is he the same as Sandusky? I believe he is responsible to a degree. Is he the monster Sandusky is? I don’t think so. Is every person in authority in the Church a monster? They all knew something. How many monsters are walking the street?

I hear you.

It’s going to be a long road, and I don’t know exactly what is going to happen to who - but the really tough part is snapping people into reality.

Happy Valley Kool-Aid is really strong stuff.

JoePa is in good Hands. The Eternal Judge knows all the who, what, when, how, and why.

I guess we wait and see what NCAA and Big Ten have to say about all of this now.

Paterno knew once he left, the truth was bound to come out, that’s why he wanted to keep coaching until the very end.

More than anything else Joe Paterno was a coward who allowed a pedophile predator to rape little boys unabated for fourteen years. There is no excuse for his failure to take preventative action.

Those in the highest levels of authoritya are monsters, they could have stopped the crime and did nothing.

The janitors were just cowards.

Don't ask me about how the Catholic Church continues, it seems they do what Penn State does, just hunker down and let people like you downplay their complicity.

To my knowledge, Joe Paterno was informed by Mike McQueery of seeing Sandusky in the shower with the little boy. He told his superiors. It was McQueery’s responsibility to go to the police. McQueery did nothing. He did not even go to the school administration. It has been implied, but it has never been said that Joe Paterno had any deeper knowledge than that of what Sandusky was doing. How about blaming Sandusky for what Sandusky was doing?

Read the Freeh report. Joe Paterno knew in 1998 during the first investigation of Sandusky what was going on. Besides, a persons obligation does not end just because you told people in positions above.

“My son, age 25, is still upset about what “happened to Paterno”.”

If that is the case, hang your head in shame, you have completely failed to instill any morals into him what-so-ever.

I will not hang my head in shame. My son is a wonderful young man and just graduated summa cum laude from law school. He started a Young Republicans group on campas. He is the light of my and his three sisters lives; a great Conservative, a patriot and successful lawyer in the making.

I didn’t mean to say that he is “still” upset. I misspoke..When he first heard and DIDN’T HAVE THE FACTS, he expressed concern cuz guess what? Many football fans of all ages revered JoPa and the legacy of Penn State..but that was especially true in his age group! It was more disbelief than anything.

Now that the truth come out, he is naturally just as disgusted as the rest of us.

So you can shut the h^ll up, Cdnexpat and mind your own business.
